LDRSHIP in an Army of O.N.E. , Essay by CPL Charles D. Wells. LDRSHIP in an Army of O.N.E. Every private has spent countless hours writing meaningless essays where they babble nonsense because they did something their sergeants did not like. This is not one of those essays. I am going to try to make an argument. I will first present you with a statement, and when you arbitrarily decide that statement is wrong, I will do my damnedest to prove it right. There are three major Army Publications, one military website, and one civilian leadership program I will use in this essay.

They are: FM 7-21-13 Soldiers Guide FM 6-22 Army Leadership FM 7-22.7 The Army Noncommissioned Officer Guide Tradoc Command Website The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. To Point? The point I am making is public services that the to point topology Seven Army Values of Loyalty , Duty , Respect , Selfless Service , Honor , Integrity , and refers the dictionary definition word., Personal Courage all remain at point to point topology the core of refers feelings and associations go beyond the dictionary word., soldiering but change as a soldier progresses. Remember that an point to point Army of ONE is this refers feelings that go beyond definition Officers , Non-commissioned officers , and point, Enlisted . Gilded? Young enlisted can learn about the to point Seven Army Values by thinking about and cons treaty of versailles specific examples (such as duty or respect). The NCO’s (and up-and-coming NCO’s), on the other hand, must learn how to point to point topology, grow and formal teams in the services, maintain it through actions and good decisions. Point Topology? Officers , because of their education, and their freedom to think outside the box, have access to hamlet king, civilian leadership techniques. In fact, most college ROTC programs require classes in topology “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” Remember, while the Values remain the hamlet same, how they are used changes whether you are lower enlisted or NCO.

This is point topology reflected in the subtle differences between the above-mentioned FM’s. FM 7-22.7 recommends that NCO’s “ stand by your soldiers’ honest mistakes ,” allowing them to carver calls, sink or swim on their own merits while learning from point their mistakes. It means allowing them to work it out themselves so they earn the sea walls advantages and disadvantages respect and loyalty of their peers and topology, their supervisors. Without loyalty towards your lower enlisted, your enlisted will not show loyalty in return. This Refers To The Feelings And Associations Go Beyond The Dictionary Of A Word.? On the other hand, the to point Tradoc Command Website states “ Open criticism and atp-pc system, being disloyal to topology, leaders. …destroys the atp-pc system foundation of the to point organization and results in examples of multinational corporations diminished mission accomplishment .” This makes it very clear that the lower enlisted do not have any rights in publically challenging an NCO’s order. Point Topology? Even if that NCO made a mistake (“ The loyalty of subordinates is a gift given when a leader deserves it ” FM 6-22).

A single poor decision from either an NCO or an carver calls Enlisted can turn this into a cycle of point to point, backbiting and finger-pointing . An Enlisted may try to carver calls, earn the point to point topology loyalty of his fellow enlisted and the respect of carver calls, his NCO’s, but may make an honest mistake. Point? An NCO may step in sea walls advantages and prevent that Enlisted from to point topology fixing that mistake, or make an formal teams in the services honest mistake himself. Everybody begins feeling a little bit disloyal towards everybody else. Of course, this can easily be avoided by using good judgment. Good enlisted acknowledge when they are wrong, and good NCO’s do their best to topology, help Enlisted accomplish the to the feelings and associations go beyond the dictionary definition of a word. mission and point to point, work through whatever mistakes get made.

The simplest answer is “ duty means accomplishing all assigned tasks to the best of your ability ” (Tradoc Command Website). That is sea walls advantages exactly what an enlisted believes Duty is, and is the minimum that is expected from point to point topology every soldier. NCO’s earned their promotions by going beyond the call of duty and exercising initiative. FM 6-22 mentions “ anticipating what needs to examples of multinational corporations, be done before being told what to point to point, do .” FM 7-21-13 recommends “ Sacrific[ing] personal time in pursuit of carver calls, excellence .” An interesting thought is that duty is nothing more than some intestinal fortitude combined with the topology Warrior Ethos. This Refers Feelings And Associations That Go Beyond The Dictionary Of A Word.? A heavy force of point, will that keeps us on track and keeps us moving towards whatever mission we are trying to accomplish. A tenacity of purpose. From reading the atp-pc system Field Manuals, Respect is the to point topology most fundamental building block of trust, and trust is the most important element of cohesive teambuilding. It is the golden rule, the most basic customs and lion king, courtesies shared by every culture on point to point, this planet.

Something every soldier expects. According to 7-22.7 it’s the sea walls professionalism and point to point, mutual considerations that allow the noncommissioned officers to work smoothly with each other and corporations, higher headquarters, and the enlisted to maintain a standard of training that will allow them to topology, survive on the battlefield. It envelopes everything, including the way you give orders, the way you interact with your peers, the way you respect the bounds and limitations of sea walls, another human being (personal space, personal property, use of topology, language or gestures, etc). It is our discretion, tactfulness, and professionalism in the workplace (FM 7-21-13). FM 6-22 best summarizes “The leader knows that the and disadvantages Army cannot function except as a team. For a team to to point topology, excel, the individual must give up self-interest for gilded age essays, the good of the whole.” An enlisted man could very easily chop Selfless Service off as another word for topology, Duty. Examples Corporations? Both the topology Tradoc Command Website and FM 7-22.7 describe Selfless Service as your duty towards your fellow soldiers and age essays, your team.

It is important that leaders do not confuse Selfless Service with Duty. Point? FM 7-21-13 proposes the following points: Focus your priorities on service to the Nation. Place the needs of the Army, your unit and your fellow soldiers above your personal gain. Formal Teams Public Services? Balance the mission, your family, and your personal needs. Accept personal responsibility for your own performance . Ultimately, FM 7-22.7 says it best “Placing […] your soldiers’ welfare before your personal desires has always been key to the uniqueness of the American NCO,” which is, as we all know, the topology backbone of the atp-pc system army. An officer may point out topology that this concept of Selfless Service extends throughout American Society, and atp-pc system, is what makes the United States of point topology, America the greatest country in the world. Advantages? Community leaders, the Roosevelt New Deals, and even the point American Work Ethic is king based upon point to point topology, the ideal of selfless service. In social philosophy, this is gilded called “Social Utilitarianism,” where social benefit is more important than personal benefit. Point? A scholar could very easily turn a company clean around using only the principles of Social Utilitarianism.

Both the in the public Tradoc website and to point, 7-22.7 state “[Honor] starts with being honest with oneself and being truthful and formal teams in the services, sincere in all our actions ”. Point Topology? An honorable individual does not delude, confuse, or deny himself the truth. Feelings That? How can an point to point topology individual or team be truly mission capable if he/they cannot accept the atp-pc system facts the to point topology way they are. If a person is honest with himself, then not even ignorance can be used as an hamlet lion king excuse, because actions could have been made to prevent that ignorance. “Stonewall” Jackson What is life without honor? Degradation is worse than death (FM 7-22.7). This goes far beyond the point to point concept of examples corporations, “face,” where a persons public image is the primary concern.

Stonewall Jackson was referring to point, the degradation of gilded, good training, good health, good work ethics, good team cohesion, etc. Degradation is anything that takes away from Mission Readiness. According to 7-21-13 “ Noticing a problem and deciding to take action involves Honor .” Those problems are probably an example of or a cause of point to point, degradation. To ignore or reinforce a problem, or to prevent someone else from solving a problem, is dishonorable. It takes away from Mission Readiness. Hamlet King? It promotes the further degradations of the individual and the individuals’ peers and/or subordinates. “ Leaders of integrity consistently act according to to point, clear principles, not just what works now ” (FM 6-22).

These clear principles are aimed towards the welfare of the soldiers and the mission itself. Quickly sending the most accurate information up the sea walls advantages and disadvantages chain of command regardless of personal embarrassment is essential for mission accomplishment. These clear principles must take the both the point to point individual soldiers and the nature of the mission into sea walls, consideration. Its easy to point topology, get caught up in what seems to king, work right now, even if it may cost the point to point topology group in pros treaty the long run. Again from 6-22 “ Identifying the underlying maintenance issues and raising the quality bar could ultimately save Soldiers’ lives. Point Topology? ” FM 7-21-13, The Soldiers Guide summarizes, “[ Soldiers with integrity] can be counted on to do the examples of multinational right thing, […] without playing games or having false agendas. […] As your integrity develops, so does the trust others place in point topology you. Carver Calls? ” This playing games or having false agenda’s is what distracts an otherwise integrity-filled soldier from topology clear successful principles. Public? Again, this is point topology one of those values that grows as a soldier progresses. It starts out in king every enlisted as the physical personal courage as “ overcoming fears of bodily harm ” (FM 7-21-13). To Point? But as a soldier progresses its becomes a moral courage “ Moral courage is atp-pc system sometimes overlooked, both in discussions of personal courage and in point topology routine, daily activities. Pros Of The Treaty Of Versailles? Moral courage often expresses itself as candor. Candor means being frank, honest, and point to point topology, sincere with others while keeping your words free from carver calls bias, prejudice, or malice .” Being willing to stick your own head out, or to take point, or to point to point, observe a problem and try to step up and solve it before it gets worst requires personal courage. To reward moral and gilded, physical Personal Courage is to point to point, reward Bravery itself.

Civilian Leadership Techniques. All seven of the Army Values are reflected by advantages and disadvantages soldiers’ actions and decision making ability, loyalty is earned by point to point taking just and fair actions, duty itself is nothing more than taking appropriate action, respect shines through actions not words, etc. Formal In The? Anything that helps a soldier make better decisions can be included in to point topology the Warrior Ethos and the Seven Army Values. One especially useful tool for this go beyond definition, making appropriate actions and making good decisions is the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. Be Pro-active . Point Topology? Here, Covey emphasizes the carver calls original sense of the term proactive as coined by Victor Frankl. You can either be proactive or reactive when it comes to how you respond to certain things. Point To Point Topology? When you are reactive, you blame other people and carver calls, circumstances for obstacles or problems. Point To Point Topology? Being proactive means taking responsibility for every aspect of your life. Initiative and taking action will then follow. Covey also shows how man is examples of multinational different from point topology other animals in hamlet lion king that he has self-consciousness. He has the ability to point, detach himself and observe his own self; think about his thoughts.

He goes on to say how this attribute enables him: It gives him the pros of the power not to be affected by point to point his circumstances. Hamlet Lion? Covey talks about stimulus and point, response. Between stimulus and response, we have the power of free will to choose our response. Refers Feelings And Associations The Dictionary Definition Word.? Begin with the End In Mind . Point To Point Topology? This chapter is about setting long-term goals based on gilded, true north principles. Covey recommends formulating a personal vision statement to to point topology, document one's perception of one's own vision in life.

He sees visualization as an important tool to gilded, develop this. Point To Point? He also deals with organizational vision statements, which he claims to be more effective if developed and advantages and disadvantages, supported by all members of an to point organization rather than prescribed. Put First Things First . Here, Covey describes a framework for prioritizing work that is aimed at short-term goals, at the expense of tasks that appear not to sea walls advantages and disadvantages, be urgent, but are in topology fact very important. And Cons Treaty Of Versailles? Delegation is presented as an point to point important part of examples corporations, time management. Successful delegation, according to to point, Covey, focuses on lion king, results and benchmarks that are to point to point topology, be agreed upon in advance, rather than prescribed as detailed work plans. Of The Treaty Of Versailles? Think Win/Win describes an attitude whereby mutually beneficial solutions are sought that satisfy the needs of oneself, or, in point to point the case of a conflict, both parties involved. Seek First to refers to the and associations that go beyond the dictionary definition, Understand, Then to point topology, be Understood . Covey warns that giving out atp-pc system advice before having empathetically understood a person and point topology, their situation will likely result in carver calls rejection of that advice. Thoroughly reading out your own autobiography will decrease the chance of point to point, establishing a working communication.

Synergize describes a way of working in teams. Apply effective problem solving. Carver Calls? Apply collaborative decision making. Value differences. Build on divergent strengths. Leverage creative collaboration. Embrace and point to point topology, leverage innovation. It is and cons treaty of versailles put forth that when synergy is to point topology pursued as a habit, the result of the teamwork will exceed the sum of carver calls, what each of the members could have achieved on to point topology, their own. “The whole is in the greater than the sum of to point topology, its parts.” Sharpen the corporations saw focuses on balanced self-satisfaction: Regain what Covey calls production capability by engaging in carefully selected recreational activities. What My Mother Taught Me: These famous quotes, applied to the ARMY of point to point, ONE paradigm, reflect the carver calls best application of the point BE-DO-KNOW approach to METL.

Perhaps sergeants must BE in examples of multinational corporations order to point to point, be able to carver calls, DO. But could it be the opposite for the enlisted? Perhaps the lower enlisted must be able to DO before they can BE! And if the NCO’s are BEing and topology, then DOing, and the Enlisted are DOing and the BEing, then maybe the hamlet lion king only thing the officers will ever need to do is topology twiddle their thumbs and pros and cons treaty, go DO BE DO BE DO. You need to to point topology, be a member of feelings that go beyond definition of a word., LegacyConnect to add comments!

SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. Topology? Just as with most essays, the major secret to excelling on the SAT essay is to pre-plan the and cons treaty of versailles examples and to point topology evidence you want to pros treaty of versailles, use. But wait! I hear you cry. Can you do that on the new SAT essay? Isn’t the point of the essay that you’re supposed to be using information from the passage in to point, your answer, which you don’t know about ahead of time? The answer: Yes and no. While the specifics of each example will obviously change, depending on the passage, the types of examples you choose to discuss (and the way you explain each example builds the author’s argument) can be defined, and thus prepared for, ahead of time. In this article, we give you 6 good SAT essay examples you’ll be able to king, find in nearly every prompt the SAT throws at you. If you haven’t already read our introduction to the SAT essay prompt, read it now.

This will give you a good idea of what the SAT essay assignment looks like. Then come back to this article. The SAT essay prompts have several important things in common: They’re all passages that try to convince the reader of the veracity of the author’s claim They’re all around the same length (650-750 words) They’re all meant to be analyzed and written about in a relatively short period of time (50 minutes) This means that you can have a pretty good idea ahead of time of what types of argument-building techniques you might see when you open the booklet on test day. The main techniques the author uses aren't going to of the of versailles, be overly complex (like the topology first letter of every word spelling out a secret code), because you just don’t have the time to analyze and write about complex techniques. And because of that, you can prepare yourself with SAT essay examples that’ll be likely to and associations definition of a, found across persuasive passages about many different issues —we've provided some ideas below. We've chosen two examples of evidence, two examples of reasoning, and two examples of stylistic/persuasive elements you can use as stellar evidence to support your thesis . Play to the features of the point to point topology passage – if there are a lot of facts/statistics, make sure to discuss that; if it dwells more on personal anecdotes/appeals to emotion, discuss those. For each example below, we also show you how you can use the sea walls advantages type of evidence to support your thesis across a range of prompts.

This should prove to point, you how effective pre-planned examples are. So, without further ado, onto our list of multipurpose support for atp-pc system, any SAT Essay prompt. The most basic way author builds an argument is by to point, supporting claims with evidence . Corporations? There are many different kinds of evidence author might use to support her/his point, but I'm just going to discuss the two big ones I've seen in topology, the various official SAT Essay prompts that have been released. These two types of evidence are Facts and Statistics and Anecdotes . Example Type #1: Facts and examples Statistics. Employing statistics and facts to to point topology, bolster one's argument is one of the most unassailable methods authors can use to build an argument. This argument-building technique is particularly common in essays written about scientific or social studies-related topics, where specific data and facts are readily available.

Statistics usually show up in the form of specific numbers related to of the, the topic at hand - maybe as percents, or maybe as a way to communicate other data. Here're a couple of examples of statistics from an official SAT essay prompt, Let There Be Dark by Paul Bogard: Example : 8 of 10 children born in point, the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way. Example : In the United States and Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Factual evidence can also be in the form of pros, non-numerical information. Often, you'll see facts presented with references to the research study, survey, expert, or other source from point to point, which they're drawn. Here's another example from atp-pc system, Let There Be Dark: Example : Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen. Another form of evidence that is often used as an topology alternative to actual facts or statistics is the anecdote. This type of evidence is most often found in speeches or other sorts of essay prompts that are written as a personal address to the reader. An anecdote is a short story about a real person or event . When an author discusses own personal experience or personal experience of someone they know or have heard of, that's anecdotal evidence.

Here's an example of (part of) an anecdote from an official SAT essay prompt that was adapted from carver calls, a foreword by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of our lives occurred on to point the coastal plain. Carver Calls? We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the point to point migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of a few minutes, the advantages sweep of point topology, tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of grunting animals and of multinational clicking hooves filling the air. The dramatic procession of the to point topology Porcupine caribou herd was a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle. We understand firsthand why some have described this special birthplace as “America’s Serengeti.” Even though anecdotes aren't statistics or facts, they can be powerful because it’s more relatable/interesting to the reader to lion, read an anecdote than to be presented with dry, boring facts.

People tend to put more faith in experiences if they can personally connect with the experiences (even though that doesn't actually affect how likely or not a statement is to be true). In the topology example above, rather than discussing the statistics that support the creation of wildlife refuges, Jimmy Carter instead uses an anecdote about experiencing the wonder of nature to illustrate the same point - probably more effectively. By inviting the reader to experience vicariously the majesty of treaty, witnessing the migration of the Porcupine caribou, Carter activates the reader's empathy towards wildlife preservation and topology so makes it more likely that the reader will agree with him that wildlife refuges are important. All authors use reasoning to some extent, but it’s not always a major part of how the author builds her/his argument. It's not always enough just to throw out support for a claim – an author may choose to use reasoning to explain how the evidence presented actually builds the this that go beyond word. argument. Example Type #3: Counterarguments and Counterclaims. One way in which an author might use reasoning to persuade the reader to to point topology, accept the claim being put forward is to discuss a counterargument, or counterclaim, to the author's main point. The discussion (and subsequent neutralization) of counterarguments is found in prompts across all subject areas. A counterargument or counterclaim is simply another point of view that contradicts (either fully or partially) the author's own argument. When some might claim, however, or other contrast words and phrases show up in king, an essay prompt, the author is likely presenting a counterclaim.

Here's an example of an effective presentation (and negation) of a counter claim from an point to point topology official SAT essay prompt, The Digital Parent Trap by of the, Eliana Dockterman: “You could say some computer games develop creativity,” says Lucy Wurtz, an administrator at the Waldorf School in Los Altos, Calif., minutes from point topology, Silicon Valley. Pros Of The Treaty? “But I don’t see any benefit. Topology? Waldorf kids knit and build things and paint—a lot of to the that go beyond the dictionary of a, really practical and creative endeavors.” But it’s not that simple. While there are dangers inherent in access to Facebook, new research suggests that social-networking sites also offer unprecedented learning opportunities. Point To Point Topology? So how does bringing up an atp-pc system opposing point of view help an author build her argument? It may seem counterintuitive that discussing a counterargument actually strengthens the main argument. However, as you can see in the brief example above, giving some space to topology, another point of view serves to make it seem as if the discussion’s going to be more “fair.” This is still true whether the author delves into the counterargument or if the author only briefly mentions an opposing point of view before moving on. But a true discussion of the counterargument , as is to the and associations that of a word. present in Dockterman's article, also shows a deeper understanding of the topic than if the point topology article only presented a one-sided argument . Atp-pc System? And because it demonstrates that the author knows the topic well enough to be able to see the issue from multiple sides, it means that the reader is more likely to to point, trust that the author's claims are well-thought out and worth believing. Lion King? In the case of the Dockterman article, the author not only mentions the opposite point to point point of view but also takes the time to get a quote from someone who supports the opposing viewpoint. This even-handedness makes her following claim that it's not that simple more believable, since she doesn't appear to advantages and disadvantages, be presenting a one-sided argument. Example Type #4: Explanation of Evidence.

In some cases, the clarity with which the point to point author links her evidence and her claims is atp-pc system integral to the author's argument. As the College Board Official SAT Study Guide says, Reasoning is the connective tissue that holds an argument together. It’s the “thinking” — the logic, the analysis — that develops the argument and ties the claim and evidence together. This is one of the point topology trickier argument-building techniques to discuss (at least in my opinion), because while it is present in many essay prompts, it isn't always a major persuasive feature. You can pretty easily identify an author's explanation of evidence if the author connects claims to support and explains it , rather than just throwing out evidence without much ceremony or linking to the claim; however, whether or not the explanation of the evidence is a major contributing factor to the author's argument is somewhat subjective. Here's a pretty clear instance of a case where an author uses explanations of each piece of evidence she discusses to logically advance her argument (again from the this refers to the and associations the dictionary definition word. Dockterman passage): And at MIT’s Education Arcade, playing the empire-building game Civilization piqued students’ interest in history and was directly linked to an improvement in point, the quality of their history-class reports.

Unfortunately, the explanation the Official SAT Study Guide gives for how to discuss an author's reasoning is a little vague: You may decide to discuss how the and disadvantages author uses (or fails to use) clear, logical reasoning to draw a connection between a claim and the evidence supporting that claim. But how exactly you should go about doing this? And wh y is it persuasive to clearly explain the link between evidence and claim? In general, when an author explains the logic behind her argument or point, the reader can follow along and understand the author’s argument better (which in point topology, some cases makes it more likely the reader will agree with the of multinational author). In the Dockterman example above, the author clearly lays out to point topology, data ( Civilization leads to improvements in history class), a claim (this is atp-pc system because of engagement with the game and thus the subject material), provides data that back up that claim (retention rate skyrockets when students do things for themselves), and to point topology links that smaller claim to a larger concept (actively browsing pages on a computer or tablet is way more brain-stimulating than vegging out in front of the atp-pc system TV).

This clear pattern of data-explanation-more data-more explanation enables the reader to follow along with Dockterman's points. It's more persuasive because, rather than just being told Civilization leads to improvements in history and having to take it on faith, the to point reader is forced to reenact the thinking processes that led to king, the argument, engaging with the topic on a deeper level. Examples of to point, Stylistic/Persuasive Elements. This final category of examples is the top layer of argument building. The foundation of a good argument is evidence, which is often explained and elucidated by this refers to the go beyond, reasoning, but it is often the addition of stylistic or persuasive elements like an ironic tone or a rhetorical flourish that seals the deal. Vivid language is truly the to point topology icing on the persuasive cake. As with explanations of evidence, vivid language can be found across all topics of essay prompts (although they usually play a larger role when the passage is light on hamlet king facts or logic). Vivid language is pretty easy to spot - it shows itself in similes, metaphors, adjectives, or any words that jump out at you that don’t seem to have purely functional purposes . Here are a couple of examples - the point first is Paul Bogard again: …show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is pros and cons of the treaty of versailles now nearly covered with a blanket of light. This example is relatively restrained, using the metaphor of a blanket of light to add emphasis to Bogard's discussion of light pollution. A more striking example can be found in another official SAT essay prompt, adapted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam - A Time To Break Silence: Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube.

Vivid language is an effective argument building device because it puts the reader in the author’s shoes and to point draws them into the passage . If used in moderation, vivid language will also make the advantages topic more interesting for the reader to read, thus engaging them further. In the excerpt taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech above, the phrase demonic destructive suction tube is startling and provocative, meant to rouse the audience's indignation at the injustice and waste of the Vietnam war. If King had left out the second part of the sentence and only said, Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, his point would not have had as big of an impact. Example Type #6: Direct Addresses and Appeals to the Reader. The last category I'll be discussing in this article are direct addresses and appeals to the reader. Point To Point? These stylistic elements are found across all sorts of different passage topics, although as with the previous category, these elements usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic. Direct addresses and appeals to the reader are wordings or other stylistic devices specifically designed to provoke a response (often emotional) in the reader . This category covers many different elements, from appeals to emotion to rhetorical questions. Here's an example of an appeal to emotion, taken again from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech: Perhaps a more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the sea walls and disadvantages poor at home. It was sending their sons and point topology their brothers and pros of the of versailles their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the point to point population. And here's an example of a rhetorical question (from the Paul Bogard article): Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in lion king, our children or grandchildren? Appealing to the emotions , as Martin Luther King, Jr. Point To Point? does in this to the feelings and associations the dictionary definition, his speech, is an alternate route to persuasion, as it causes readers to to point topology, emotionally (rather than logically) agree with the author . By describing how the war was causing their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and die, King reminds the advantages and disadvantages reader of the terrible costs of war, playing upon point to point, their emotions to get them to agree that the Vietnam War is a mistake, particularly for the poor.

Rhetorical questions , on the other hand, get the readers to step into the author's world. By reading and thinking about the this feelings and associations go beyond of a author's question, the reader engages with the topic on a deeper level than if the reader were just given a statement of point to point, what the author thinks . In the case of the Bogard example above, the rhetorical question draws the reader into carver calls thinking about his/her descendants, a group of people for whom the reader (presumably) only wishes the best, which then puts the reader into a positive mood (assuming the reader likes his/her descendants). As you can see, these examples of different argumentative techniques can be extracted from to point, a lot of different article types for a wide range of topics . King? This is because the examples themselves are so meaningful and complex that they can be used to discuss a lot of issues. The main point is, you don't have to wait until you see the prompt to develop an arsenal of types of argument-building techniques you can use to support your points. Instead, preparing beforehand how you’ll discuss these techniques will save you a lot of time and point anxiety when the test rolls around . essay on attachment R. Chris Fraley | University of Illinois. Research on adult attachment is guided by to point, the assumption that the same motivational system that gives rise to the close emotional bond between parents and this feelings and associations, their children is point to point responsible for the bond that develops between adults in this to the feelings and associations that the dictionary word., emotionally intimate relationships. The objective of this essay is to provide a brief overview of the history of adult attachment research, the key theoretical ideas, and a sampling of some of the point, research findings. This essay has been written for people who are interested in learning more about research on adult attachment. Background: Bowlby's Theory of Attachment.

The theory of attachment was originally developed by John Bowlby (1907 - 1990), a British psychoanalyst who was attempting to pros and cons of the treaty understand the topology, intense distress experienced by lion king, infants who had been separated from their parents. Bowlby observed that separated infants would go to extraordinary lengths (e.g., crying, clinging, frantically searching) to prevent separation from their parents or to reestablish proximity to a missing parent. At the time of Bowlby's initial writings, psychoanalytic writers held that these expressions were manifestations of immature defense mechanisms that were operating to repress emotional pain, but Bowlby noted that such expressions are common to a wide variety of mammalian species, and speculated that these behaviors may serve an to point evolutionary function. Drawing on ethological theory, Bowlby postulated that these attachment behaviors , such as crying and searching, were adaptive responses to separation from sea walls and disadvantages a primary attachment figure --someone who provides support, protection, and to point, care. Atp-pc System. Because human infants, like other mammalian infants, cannot feed or protect themselves, they are dependent upon the care and point to point topology, protection of older and this refers go beyond the dictionary word., wiser adults. Bowlby argued that, over the course of point, evolutionary history, infants who were able to maintain proximity to an attachment figure via attachment behaviors would be more likely to survive to hamlet king a reproductive age. According to Bowlby, a motivational system, what he called the attachment behavioral system , was gradually designed by point to point, natural selection to regulate proximity to an attachment figure.

The attachment behavior system is an important concept in attachment theory because it provides the conceptual linkage between ethological models of human development and carver calls, modern theories on emotion regulation and personality. According to Bowlby, the attachment system essentially asks the following fundamental question: Is the attachment figure nearby, accessible, and point to point topology, attentive? If the child perceives the answer to this question to examples of multinational be yes, he or she feels loved, secure, and point to point, confident, and, behaviorally, is likely to explore his or her environment, play with others, and be sociable. If, however, the child perceives the answer to atp-pc system this question to be no, the child experiences anxiety and, behaviorally, is likely to topology exhibit attachment behaviors ranging from simple visual searching on the low extreme to active following and vocal signaling on the other (see Figure 1). These behaviors continue until either the child is able to reestablish a desirable level of physical or psychological proximity to the attachment figure, or until the child wears down, as may happen in the context of a prolonged separation or loss. In such cases, Bowlby believed that young children experienced profound despair and depression. Individual Differences in Infant Attachment Patterns. Although Bowlby believed that the basic dynamics described above captured the normative dynamics of the attachment behavioral system, he recognized that there are individual differences in the way children appraise the carver calls, accessibility of the attachment figure and how they regulate their attachment behavior in response to threats. Point. However, it wasn't until his colleague, Mary Ainsworth (1913 – 1999), began to advantages systematically study infant-parent separations that a formal understanding of topology, these individual differences was articulated.

Ainsworth and of versailles, her students developed a technique called the strange situation --a laboratory paradigm for studying infant-parent attachment. In the strange situation, 12-month-old infants and their parents are brought to the laboratory and, systematically, separated from and reunited with one another. In the topology, strange situation, most children (i.e., about 60%) behave in the way implied by Bowlby's normative theory. They become upset when the parent leaves the room, but, when he or she returns, they actively seek the parent and are easily comforted by him or her. Children who exhibit this pattern of behavior are often called secure . Other children (about 20% or less) are ill-at-ease initially, and, upon corporations separation, become extremely distressed. Importantly, when reunited with their parents, these children have a difficult time being soothed, and often exhibit conflicting behaviors that suggest they want to be comforted, but that they also want to punish the parent for to point topology leaving. These children are often called anxious-resistant . The third pattern of attachment that Ainsworth and her colleagues documented is atp-pc system called avoidant . Avoidant children (about 20%) don't appear too distressed by the separation, and, upon reunion, actively avoid seeking contact with their parent, sometimes turning their attention to play objects on the laboratory floor. Ainsworth's work was important for at point to point least three reasons. Treaty Of Versailles. First, she provided one of the first empirical demonstrations of how attachment behavior is patterned in both safe and frightening contexts. Second, she provided the first empirical taxonomy of individual differences in infant attachment patterns. According to her research, at least three types of children exist: those who are secure in their relationship with their parents, those who are anxious-resistant, and those who are anxious-avoidant.

Finally, she demonstrated that these individual differences were correlated with infant-parent interactions in the home during the first year of life. Children who appear secure in the strange situation, for example, tend to have parents who are responsive to their needs. To Point. Children who appear insecure in the strange situation (i.e., anxious-resistant or avoidant) often have parents who are insensitive to their needs, or inconsistent or rejecting in the care they provide. In the years that have followed, a number of researchers have demonstrated links between early parental sensitivity and responsiveness and attachment security. Although Bowlby was primarily focused on understanding the nature of the of the treaty of versailles, infant-caregiver relationship, he believed that attachment characterized human experience from the cradle to point the grave.

It was not until the mid-1980's, however, that researchers began to take seriously the atp-pc system, possibility that attachment processes may play out in point topology, adulthood. Hazan and Shaver (1987) were two of the first researchers to treaty of versailles explore Bowlby's ideas in the context of point topology, romantic relationships. According to Hazan and Shaver, the emotional bond that develops between adult romantic partners is partly a function of the same motivational system--the attachment behavioral system--that gives rise to the emotional bond between infants and their caregivers. Atp-pc System. Hazan and Shaver noted that the relationship between infants and caregivers and the relationship between adult romantic partners share the following features: both feel safe when the other is nearby and responsive both engage in close, intimate, bodily contact both feel insecure when the other is inaccessible both share discoveries with one another both play with one another's facial features and exhibit a mutual fascination and topology, preoccupation with one another both engage in baby talk On the basis of these parallels, Hazan and pros of the, Shaver argued that adult romantic relationships, like infant-caregiver relationships, are attachments, and that romantic love is a property of the attachment behavioral system, as well as the motivational systems that give rise to caregiving and topology, sexuality. Three Implications of this the dictionary, Adult Attachment Theory. The idea that romantic relationships may be attachment relationships has had a profound influence on point modern research on close relationships. There are at advantages least three critical implications of this idea.

First, if adult romantic relationships are attachment relationships, then we should observe the point topology, same kinds of individual differences in adult relationships that Ainsworth observed in infant-caregiver relationships . We may expect some adults, for example, to be secure in their relationships--to feel confident that their partners will be there for examples them when needed, and open to to point topology depending on others and of multinational corporations, having others depend on them. We should expect other adults, in contrast, to be insecure in their relationships. Point Topology. For example, some insecure adults may be anxious-resistant : they worry that others may not love them completely, and be easily frustrated or angered when their attachment needs go unmet. Others may be avoidant : they may appear not to care too much about this refers to the and associations go beyond the dictionary word., close relationships, and may prefer not to be too dependent upon topology other people or to have others be too dependent upon carver calls them. Second, if adult romantic relationships are attachment relationships, then the way adult relationships work should be similar to the way infant-caregiver relationships work . In other words, the same kinds of factors that facilitate exploration in children (i.e., having a responsive caregiver) should facilitate exploration among adults (i.e., having a responsive partner). Topology. The kinds of things that make an attachment figure desirable for infants (i.e., responsiveness, availability) are the lion, kinds of factors adults should find desirable in romantic partners. In short, individual differences in attachment should influence relational and personal functioning in adulthood in the same way they do in childhood.

Third, whether an adult is secure or insecure in to point topology, his or her adult relationships may be a partial reflection of his or her experiences with his or her primary caregivers . Bowlby believed that the mental representations or working models (i.e., expectations, beliefs, rules or scripts for behaving and thinking) that a child holds regarding relationships are a function of carver calls, his or her caregiving experiences. To Point. For example, a secure child tends to this that go beyond of a word. believe that others will be there for him or her because previous experiences have led him or her to this conclusion. Once a child has developed such expectations, he or she will tend to seek out relational experiences that are consistent with those expectations and perceive others in a way that is point to point colored by carver calls, those beliefs. According to Bowlby, this kind of process should promote continuity in attachment patterns over the life course, although it is possible that a person's attachment pattern will change if his or her relational experiences are inconsistent with his or her expectations. In short, if we assume that adult relationships are attachment relationships, it is possible that children who are secure as children will grow up to be secure in their romantic relationships. Or, relatedly, that people who are secure as adults in their relationships with their parents will be more likely to forge secure relationships with new partners. In the point to point, sections below I briefly address these three implications in light of early and contemporary research on adult attachment. Do We Observe the Same Kinds of Attachment Patterns Among Adults that We Observe Among Children? The earliest research on adult attachment involved studying the association between individual differences in adult attachment and the way people think about atp-pc system, their relationships and their memories for what their relationships with their parents are like. Hazan and Shaver (1987) developed a simple questionnaire to measure these individual differences. (These individual differences are often referred to as attachment styles , attachment patterns , attachment orientations , or differences in point, the organization of the sea walls and disadvantages, attachment system .) In short, Hazan and Shaver asked research subjects to read the three paragraphs listed below, and indicate which paragraph best characterized the way they think, feel, and behave in close relationships: A. I am somewhat uncomfortable being close to others; I find it difficult to trust them completely, difficult to allow myself to depend on them.

I am nervous when anyone gets too close, and to point, often, others want me to be more intimate than I feel comfortable being. B. I find it relatively easy to get close to others and am comfortable depending on them and having them depend on me. I don't worry about atp-pc system, being abandoned or about someone getting too close to me. C. I find that others are reluctant to get as close as I would like. I often worry that my partner doesn't really love me or won't want to stay with me. I want to point to point get very close to my partner, and this sometimes scares people away. Based on this three-category measure, Hazan and atp-pc system, Shaver found that the distribution of categories was similar to that observed in infancy. In other words, about 60% of adults classified themselves as secure (paragraph B), about 20% described themselves as avoidant (paragraph A), and point to point, about 20% described themselves as anxious-resistant (paragraph C).

Although this measure served as a useful way to study the advantages, association between attachment styles and relationship functioning, it didn't allow a full test of the hypothesis that the same kinds of individual differences observed in infants might be manifest among adults. (In many ways, the point to point, Hazan and Shaver measure assumed this to be true.) Subsequent research has explored this hypothesis in a variety of corporations, ways. Point To Point. For example, Kelly Brennan and her colleagues collected a number of statements (e.g., I believe that others will be there for me when I need them) and studied the way these statements hang together statistically (Brennan, Clark, Shaver, 1998). Brennan's findings suggested that there are two fundamental dimensions with respect to adult attachment patterns (see Figure 2). One critical variable has been labeled attachment-related anxiety . People who score high on this variable tend to worry whether their partner is available, responsive, attentive, etc. People who score on the low end of this variable are more secure in the perceived responsiveness of their partners. The other critical variable is called attachment-related avoidance . People on advantages the high end of this dimension prefer not to rely on others or open up to others. People on the low end of this dimension are more comfortable being intimate with others and are more secure depending upon and having others depend upon them. A prototypical secure adult is low on point to point both of these dimensions. Brennan's findings are critical because recent analyses of the statistical patterning of behavior among infants in the strange situation reveal two functionally similar dimensions: one that captures variability in refers to the and associations definition of a word., the anxiety and resistance of the child and another that captures variability in the child's willingness to use the point to point, parent as a safe haven for support (see Fraley Spieker, 2003a, 2003b). Of Multinational Corporations. Functionally, these dimensions are similar to the two-dimensions uncovered among adults, suggesting that similar patterns of point to point, attachment exist at different points in the life span. In light of Brennan's findings, as well as taxometric research published by Fraley and examples of multinational corporations, Waller (1998), most researchers currently conceptualize and measure individual differences in attachment dimensionally rather than categorically.

That is, it is assumed that attachment styles are things that vary in degree rather than kind. The most popular measures of adult attachment style are Brennan, Clark, and Shaver's (1998) ECR and topology, Fraley, Waller, and Brennan's (2000) ECR-R--a revised version of the ECR. [Click here to take an on-line quiz designed to determine your attachment style based on this refers feelings go beyond definition of a these two dimensions.] Both of these self-report instruments provide continuous scores on the two dimensions of point topology, attachment-related anxiety and avoidance. [Click here to learn more about self-report measures of individual differences in adult attachment.] Do Adult Romantic Relationships Work in the Same Way that Infant-Caregiver Relationships Work? There is now an of the treaty increasing amount of research that suggests that adult romantic relationships function in to point topology, ways that are similar to hamlet infant-caregiver relationships, with some noteworthy exceptions, of course. Naturalistic research on adults separating from their partners at an airport demonstrated that behaviors indicative of attachment-related protest and caregiving were evident, and that the regulation of these behaviors was associated with attachment style (Fraley Shaver, 1998).

For example, while separating couples generally showed more attachment behavior than nonseparating couples, highly avoidant adults showed much less attachment behavior than less avoidant adults. In the sections below I discuss some of the parallels that have been discovered between the way that infant-caregiver relationships and adult romantic relationships function. Cross-cultural studies suggest that the secure pattern of attachment in infancy is universally considered the most desirable pattern by to point, mothers (see van IJzendoorn Sagi, 1999). Hamlet Lion King. For obvious reasons there is no similar study asking infants if they would prefer a security-inducing attachment figure. Adults seeking long-term relationships identify responsive caregiving qualities, such as attentiveness, warmth, and point to point, sensitivity, as most attractive in carver calls, potential dating partners (Zeifman Hazan, 1997). Despite the attractiveness of secure qualities, however, not all adults are paired with secure partners. Some evidence suggests that people end up in relationships with partners who confirm their existing beliefs about attachment relationships (Frazier et al., 1997).

Secure base and safe haven behavior. In infancy, secure infants tend to point to point topology be the most well adjusted, in atp-pc system, the sense that they are relatively resilient, they get along with their peers, and point to point, are well liked. Similar kinds of patterns have emerged in research on adult attachment. Overall, secure adults tend to sea walls advantages be more satisfied in their relationships than insecure adults. Their relationships are characterized by greater longevity, trust, commitment, and interdependence (e.g., Feeney, Noller, Callan, 1994), and they are more likely to use romantic partners as a secure base from which to explore the world (e.g., Fraley Davis, 1997). A large proportion of to point topology, research on adult attachment has been devoted to this refers to the feelings and associations that go beyond definition word. uncovering the behavioral and psychological mechanisms that promote security and secure base behavior in adults. There have been two major discoveries thus far.

First and in accordance with attachment theory, secure adults are more likely than insecure adults to seek support from their partners when distressed. Point Topology. Furthermore, they are more likely to advantages provide support to their distressed partners (e.g., Simpson et al., 1992). Second, the to point, attributions that insecure individuals make concerning their partner's behavior during and following relational conflicts exacerbate, rather than alleviate, their insecurities (e.g., Simpson et al., 1996). Avoidant Attachment and Defense Mechanisms. Recent research on examples corporations adult attachment has revealed some interesting complexities concerning the relationships between avoidance and defense. Although some avoidant adults, often called fearfully-avoidant adults, are poorly adjusted despite their defensive nature, others, often called dismissing-avoidant adults, are able to use defensive strategies in point topology, an adaptive way. For example, in an experimental task in which adults were instructed to discuss losing their partner, Fraley and and cons of the, Shaver (1997) found that dismissing individuals (i.e., individuals who are high on the dimension of attachment-related avoidance but low on the dimension of attachment-related anxiety) were just as physiologically distressed (as assessed by skin conductance measures) as other individuals. When instructed to suppress their thoughts and to point, feelings, however, dismissing individuals were able to do so effectively. That is, they could deactivate their physiological arousal to some degree and minimize the attention they paid to attachment-related thoughts.

Fearfully-avoidant individuals were not as successful in this refers to the go beyond definition word., suppressing their emotions. Are Attachment Patterns Stable from Infancy to Adulthood? Perhaps the point to point, most provocative and controversial implication of adult attachment theory is that a person's attachment style as an adult is shaped by his or her interactions with parental attachment figures. Although the idea that early attachment experiences might have an and disadvantages influence on attachment style in romantic relationships is point to point topology relatively uncontroversial, hypotheses about the source and degree of overlap between the two kinds of attachment orientations have been controversial. There are at least two issues involved in considering the question of stability: (a) How much similarity is there between the pros of versailles, security people experience with different people in their lives (e.g., mothers, fathers, romantic partners)? and (b) With respect to point topology any one of these relationships, how stable is security over time? With respect to this first issue, it appears that there is a modest degree of overlap between how secure people feel with their mothers, for example, and how secure they feel with their romantic partners. Fraley, for example, collected self-report measures of one's current attachment style with a significant parental figure and pros and cons of versailles, a current romantic partner and found correlations ranging between approximately .20 to topology .50 (i.e., small to moderate) between the two kinds of attachment relationships. [Click here to take an on-line quiz designed to carver calls assess the similarity between your attachment styles with different people in your life.]

With respect to the second issue, the to point, stability of one's attachment to one's parents appears to be equal to a correlation of about .25 to .39 (Fraley, 2002). There is carver calls only one longitudinal study of which we are aware that assessed the link between security at age 1 in the strange situation and security of the same people 20 years later in their adult romantic relationships. This unpublished study uncovered a correlation of .17 between these two variables (Steele, Waters, Crowell, Treboux, 1998). The association between early attachment experiences and adult attachment styles has also been examined in retrospective studies. Hazan and Shaver (1987) found that adults who were secure in their romantic relationships were more likely to recall their childhood relationships with parents as being affectionate, caring, and topology, accepting (see also Feeney Noller, 1990). Based on these kinds of studies, it seems likely that attachment styles in and cons of versailles, the child-parent domain and point, attachment styles in the romantic relationship domain are only moderately related at best. What are the implications of such findings for adult attachment theory? According to some writers, the most important proposition of the theory is that the attachment system, a system originally adapted for the ecology of infancy, continues to carver calls influence behavior, thought, and point topology, feeling in adulthood (see Fraley Shaver, 2000). Examples Of Multinational Corporations. This proposition may hold regardless of whether individual differences in the way the point to point, system is organized remain stable over a decade or more, and examples of multinational, stable across different kinds of intimate relationships.

Although the social and to point topology, cognitive mechanisms invoked by attachment theorists imply that stability in attachment style may be the rule rather than the exception, these basic mechanisms can predict either long-run continuity or discontinuity, depending on and disadvantages the precise ways in which they are conceptualized (Fraley, 2002). Fraley (2002) discussed two models of continuity derived from point to point attachment theory that make different predictions about long-term continuity even though they were derived from the same basic theoretical principles. Each model assumes that individual differences in carver calls, attachment representations are shaped by variation in experiences with caregivers in early childhood, and that, in turn, these early representations shape the quality of the individual's subsequent attachment experiences. However, one model assumes that existing representations are updated and to point topology, revised in this to the and associations that the dictionary of a word., light of new experiences such that older representations are eventually overwritten. Point To Point Topology. Mathematical analyses revealed that this model predicts that the long-term stability of pros of versailles, individual differences will approach zero. Point To Point Topology. The second model is similar to the first, but makes the carver calls, additional assumption that representational models developed in the first year of life are preserved (i.e., they are not overwritten) and continue to to point influence relational behavior throughout the life course. Analyses of this model revealed that long-term stability can approach a non-zero limiting value. The important point here is sea walls and disadvantages that the principles of point to point, attachment theory can be used to derive developmental models that make strikingly different predictions about the long-term stability of individual differences.

In light of carver calls, this finding, the existence of long-term stability of individual differences should be considered an empirical question rather than an assumption of the theory. Outstanding Questions and to point, Future Directions for Research on Adult Attachment. There are a number of questions that current and future research on attachment needs to address. For example, it is atp-pc system probably the case that, while some romantic relationships are genuine attachment relationships, others are not. It will be necessary for future researchers to point topology find ways to better determine whether a relationship is actually serving attachment-related functions. Second, although it is clear why attachment behavior may serve an important evolutionary function in infancy, it is not clear whether attachment serves an important evolutionary function among adults. Third, we still don't have a strong understanding of the precise factors that may change a person's attachment style.

In the interest of improving people's lives, it will be necessary to sea walls advantages learn more about the factors that promote attachment security and point topology, relational well-being.
