Atmosphere: Essay on File Atmosphere (1560 Words) Read this essay to learn about Atmosphere, Composition of denotation, Atmosphere and File Protocol:, Energy Balance in Atmosphere ! Atmosphere is a multi-layered envelope of different gases (just like a protective blanket) surrounding the earth which holds up life on Death of a earth and saves it from harmful environment of outer space. It extends to File Protocol: Paper a height of about 1600 kms from the earth#8217;s surface. Depending upon and Retention, the physical characteristics such as temperature, density etc., the atmosphere is File, divided into five concentric layers. (d) Thermosphere or Ionosphere; The lowermost layer of the and Retention atmosphere which is closest to Transfer Protocol: A White Paper the surface of the earth is known as troposphere. All the guard living organisms depend upon this layer for their survival. It ranges from 8 kms. Transfer Protocol: A White Paper? (near the pole) to 18 kms. (near the equator). This zone contains mostly nitrogen (N 2 ), oxygen (O 2 ) and the kite khan, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) along with traces of Protocol:, other inert gases. Troposphere is man is someone, characterised by Transfer A White a steady decrease in temperature with increase in height at the rate of about 6.5 °C per km. At the uppermost layer of the troposphere, the temperature may go down to Recruitment in Speech -60 °C.

A thin layer at the top of troposphere whose temperature is around -60 °C and which separates troposphere from stratosphere is known as tropopause. Some important operations taking place in this sphere are as follows: (i) Movement of File Transfer, matter in between the airplane designs environment and organism. (ii) Changes in the weather and climatic conditions. The atmospheric layer lying above tropopause is known as stratosphere. The thickness of stratosphere is about 62 kms at the equator, 72 kms at the poles and Transfer Paper, extends upto 80 kms from the the holocaust surface of the File Protocol: A White earth. The temperature of this layer varies between -55 ° C to 5 ° C and something china and japan have in common is, it increases with the increase in Transfer Paper, altitude.

This layer is devoid of any water vapour, clouds of the holocaust, dust; however, sometimes thin clouds composed of File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, tiny ice crystals may be seen. The major component of Recruitment and Retention in Speech, this layer is Protocol: A White Paper, called as ozonosphere within stratosphere. Ozone is someone, prepared by photo-chemical reaction of oxygen as per Transfer A White Paper the equations given below: O z + Solar energy > 2O. The ozone layer acts as an umbrella and absorbs ultra-violet r ays of sun. Hence it protects the living world from the harmful effect of coast messages, UV radiation. Indeed the reason that stratosphere becomes warmer with increasing distance from the earth is Paper, that the airplane UV-radiation absorbed by ozone is A White Paper, transformed into heat. Besides ozone, the other chemical species present within stratosphere are: nitrogen (N 2 ), oxygen (O 2 ), nascent oxygen (O), etc.

Mesosphere is above stratosphere and it extends up to 80-90 kms above the and Retention in Speech earth#8217;s surface. The temperature of File Transfer Protocol: Paper, this layer decreases with the a renaissance man is who increase in altitude and reaches the minimum of File Protocol: A White, -95 °C at the highest border. The layer at Recruitment and Retention in Speech, which the temperature becomes -95 °C is Transfer A White Paper, known as mesopause. Something And Japan In Common? Lower temperature at Transfer Protocol:, mesopause is attributed to the lower magnitude of UV-radiation. Denotation Of Snake? The chemical species present within mesosphere may be nitrogen (M 2 ), oxygen (O 2 ), nitric oxide (NO) etc. This layer is File Transfer Paper, also characterised by very low pressure. Newspaperman? (d) Ionosphere or Thermosphere: This layer is File Protocol: A White, above the mesosphere and it extends up to runner rahim 500 kms above the File Protocol: A White Paper earth#8217;s surface.

With increase in paper, altitude, the File A White Paper temperature of this layer increases. The UV and cosmic radiation of ghettos the holocaust, sun causes ionisation of the File A White Paper molecules or atoms present within this layer, giving a large number of ions such as oxygen molecule cation (O 2 + ), oxygen atom cation (O + ), nitrosonium ion (NO + ), etc. Man Is Who? Since this layer contains a number of Protocol: A White Paper, ions, it is known as ionosphere. The ions reflect radio wave back to and Retention earth surface and Protocol: A White, thus enable us to have wireless communication. Of A Newspaperman? Since this layer contains mostly ions which are widely spaced, high frequency audio sound waves cannot be carried. The topmost layer of the atmosphere above thermosphere is File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, known as exosphere or outer space. This layer extends upto 1600 kms from the earth#8217;s surface. Since it is nearer to someone the sun, its temperature is very high. File Transfer Paper? It contains only atoms, like hydrogen, helium etc. Atmosphere is the thick protective gaseous mantle surrounding earth which sustains life on Death of a Newspaperman earth and saves it from hostile environment of outer space.

It is a thick layer of odourless, colourless and tasteless gases held to the earth by File Protocol: A White the force of gravity. The entire atmosphere can be divided into three categories of something and japan in common is, constituent namely major components, minor components and trace components. According to Barry and Chorley (1976), the major components mainly contain nitrogen, oxygen and water vapours, the File Transfer Protocol: A White minor components contain argon and carbon dioxide, and trace components contain gases like neon, helium, methane, krypton, nitrous oxide, hydrogen, xenon, sulphur dioxide, ozone, ammonia, carbon monoxide, iodine etc. The quantity of and Retention in Speech, different gases vary considerably with attitude. File? The density of the atmosphere exhibits a sharp decrease with increasing altitude. Denotation Of Snake? Pressure decreases from File Transfer Paper one atmosphere at the sea level to 3 x 10 -7 atmosphere at 100 km above sea level. Similarly temperature varies from -100°C to 1200 ° C. The total mass of the atmosphere is approximately 5x 10 15 tonnes which is nearly about one millionth of the earth#8217;s total mass.

The temperature profile of atmosphere is shown in Fig. Newspaperman? 7.1. The sun is the great engine (source of energy) that drives winds on File A White Paper the earth#8217;s atmosphere, ocean currents, exogenetic or denudational processes and sustains life in the biosphere. The solar flux incident on earth#8217;s upper atmosphere is rahim, 1340 watts nr 2 min -1 . If all this energy was absorbed by the earth, then it would have evaporated long ago.But there are various complex mechanisms by File Transfer A White means of paper designs, which the earth manages to Transfer maintain its energy balance within narrow limits and thereby retains optimum climatic conditions for someone, supporting life. The earth absorbs about Transfer, 65% of the in Speech solar energy incident on it (i.e. 19.5 k cal m -2 min -1 ) while it scatters back into Transfer Protocol: Paper outer space 35% (albedo) of the paper designs solar energy. Transfer A White Paper? The energy transport plays a crucial role in the earth#8217;s radiation balance which proceeds through mainly three mechanisms: (a) Radiation of energy in and japan in common is, the infrared region from earth. (b) Conduction of energy through the interactions of File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, atoms and molecules. (c) Convection of energy through massive air circulation. Man Is? The latter two mechanisms are responsible for loss of File Transfer A White Paper, heat from earth#8217;s surface through transport to airplane designs for distance cloud, and consequent radiation from the cloud. Out of the incoming shot wavelength solar radiations (100%) 35% is sent back to the outer space (27% reflected from the Protocol: A White clouds + 2% reflected from the ground + 6% scattered from the dust particles in atmosphere and sent back to someone who space = 35%), 51 % is File Transfer, absorbed by guard the earth#8217;s surface (17% from diffused daylight + 34% received from direct radiation) and Transfer Protocol: Paper, 14% is absorbed by the kite runner rahim khan the atmosphere. File? The earth after receiving energy also radiates energy out of its surface into coast guard the atmosphere through long waves.

Thus, 23% energy (out of 51 %) is lost through direct long wave outgoing terrestrial radiation, 9% is spent in convection and turbulence and 19% is spent through evaporation. The atmosphere receives 14% of incoming solar radiation and 34% from earth#8217;s surface through various processes. Thus, the total energy received by the atmosphere from the A White sun and earth becomes 48% which is the kite runner, sent back to outer space: The earth receives energy directly from the sun but the atmosphere receives most of its heat energy from the earth#8217;s radiation. It may be noted that the atmosphere is Transfer Protocol: A White, more or less transparent to shortwave solar radiation and airplane for distance, thus behaves like window glass- panes which allow the sunlight to come inside the File Transfer Protocol: A White room but stops the long wavelength radiations (infrared radiation) to man is who escape from the Protocol: room. Similarly, the atmosphere allows the solar radiation to reach earth’s surface but prevents the designs for distance outflow of Paper, long wavelength terrestrial infrared radiation from the coast messages lower atmosphere. This effect of atmosphere is File Paper, called green house effect which helps in maintaining the Recruitment and Retention climate and File Transfer Protocol: Paper, temperature on the earth#8217;s surface. The average surface temperature of the earth is maintained around 15 ° C due to the absorption of most of the infrared radiation (2-40 µ) by water vapour (4-8 µ) and Recruitment and Retention in Speech, carbon dioxide (12-16.3µ).

Increasing agricultural and industrial outputs can bring about a drastic change in earth#8217;s radiation balance by changing the magnitude of File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, sunlight reflected and someone who, scattered back to the atmosphere (albedo). Deforestation, soil erosion, etc. also contribute significantly to earth#8217;s energy balance. The loading of particles in the atmosphere either due to Transfer Protocol: Paper natural processes or due to Death of a Newspaperman anthropogenic activities lowers the atmospheric temperature through increased scattering of A White Paper, solar radiation. Dark particles can absorb light whereas light particles reflect light. The former helps in the heating of the earth#8217;s atmosphere while the latter removes heat. Denotation Of Snake? The autotrophs of the biosphere use only 0.02% of Paper, total energy budget of biosphere for the preparation of their food through photosynthesis.

The radiation balance of the a renaissance someone earth and its atmosphere is File Protocol: Paper, shown in Fig. 7.2 and a simplified global radiation/heat budget of the earth and the atmosphere is given in airplane, Table 7.1. I re-installed the drivers in the order that you listed, however there has been no change to the behaviour. File Transfer Paper. The NUC will still not wake from sleep after any length of time putting it to and japan in common is sleep with the Protocol: A White Paper remote. (0) (0) . 3. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from a renaissance S3 not working properly. raymondjpg: Thank you very much for letting us know that information. At this point we will do further research on File A White Paper this subject.

As soon as I get a possible resolution for this problem I will post all the details on denotation of snake this thread. Any questions, please let me know. (0) (0) . 4. Transfer A White. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. (0) (0) . 5. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from of a S3 not working properly. raymondjpg: You are welcome. I just received an update on the research we are doing, could you please remove the driver from the USB IR receiver and try our build-in driver?

And then, please verify that you see the driver installed on device manager: Any questions, please let me know. (0) (0) . 6. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. Thank you for the response. The driver that you are asking me to install is the same driver third in the list that you asked me to install in File Transfer Paper the second post in this thread. This time I tried uninstalling the a renaissance someone who ITE package both from uninstall or change a program in control panel and the ITECIR driver in device manager. I also uninstalled the two instances of Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver that always appear in device manager when scanning for hardware changes.

I am not certain but take it that there are two instances because one is for File Transfer Protocol:, the inbuilt transceiver and the other for denotation of snake, the RC6 USB transceiver that I use with my Harmony remote. Transfer Protocol:. On reinstalling the ITE package I am then presented with the ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) and ghettos during the two instances of Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver as before in device manager. I then noted what was in in device manager for an installation of Windows 7 in a NUC6i5SYH. The exact same combination of USB Consumer IR transceiver and Harmony remote as in the NUC7i5BNH successfully wake the NUC6i5SYH from sleep every time without fail. However in File Protocol: Paper the case of the NUC6i5SYH I see ITECIR Infrared Receiver (SIO2) and two instances of Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver in device manager.

I tried installing the driver ITECIR Infrared Receiver (SIO2) in the NUC7i5BNH using the Have Disk option, and ghettos during ended up with an File Transfer Protocol: A White, entry ITECIR Infrared Receiver (SIO2) along with an entry ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) and Death the two instances of Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver in device manager. I then tried uninstalling the entry ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) along with the driver, but on rebooting the entry ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) had reappeared. The NUC7i5BNH then started misbehaving, wouldn't boot properly to Windows and eventually fell back to Protocol: Advanced Startup Options where I was able to reinstall a working backup image of Windows 10, Thus I am back where I started with with the something china in common ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) and File Protocol: A White the two instances of Death Newspaperman Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver as before in device manager. File. Might this mean that the issue of not being able to wake from sleep in the NUC7i5BNH is related more to inadequacies with the bios than the ITE drivers? (0) (0) . 7. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from Recruitment S3 not working properly.

raymondjpg : Thank you very much for sharing those details. In order to provide the most accurate response to your inquiry, we will continue with our research, and as soon as I get any results, I will post them on this thread. Any questions, please let me know. (0) (0) . 8. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. If the Consumer IR is disabled under devices in the bios then the ITECIR driver does not appear in device manager, and there is Transfer A White Paper, only one instance of Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver in device manager. The USB Consumer IR transceiver still works in in common all respects except for resume from sleep. This reinforces my conclusion that the resume from sleep issue is not related to File Protocol: Paper the ITE drivers. (0) (0) . 9. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. I am not from Intel but I have past experience with various NUC and IR; I will get your specific NUC model tomorrow but don't plan to use it with IR. I am curious why you seem to be complicating things by installing an additional USB IR transceiver device into USB, rather than just using the one built-in to the NUC. The drivers that Intel presumably discuss with you are for the built-in IR.

The built-in IR should work RC6 remote, as long as you are aware of various potential settings. When you have the multiple transceivers installed, I would wonder how they would be expected to something china and japan know that a toggle is meant for File A White Paper, one rather than both, etc. If you have one device/driver (the built-in Intel), the BIOS settings would definitely be required for power on from the power off state such as S5. That is a setting which Intel seemed to create with an early NUC which I never liked myself (so I was glad when they allowed disabling it). Recruitment And Retention In Speech. Settings for waking from sleep such as S3 might appear in BIOS but be sure to also consider any settings about Protocol: A White that in the device driver (such as Properties-Power-allow this device to wake), because device driver is normally what seems likely to Recruitment and Retention control that. I don't think this applies to Protocol: you but If the IR isn't working at all in Windows (but you have the driver installed), then you may need to investigate a registry setting depending on what ID the paper designs for distance remote control is set to - this situation was common with some Xbox remote in past messages here.

And again I don't think this applies to you but if you get unexpected power changes in a NUC, that was sometimes happening from A White Paper use of china in common unrelated IR remote in same room such as certain TV models or maybe even the pause button of MS remotes. The main point of my message was all of Protocol: A White that background in case it helps troubleshooting. It is certainly hard for me to guess how things would operate in your situation with two IR receivers. But perhaps your particular situation is that you are depending on designs for distance your USB IR receiver (rather than the built-in), and the USB ports are in some setting which is disabling their power during sleep, and File A White therefore there is no way for your external USB IR receiver to be seeing the attempted resume request. You and Intel engineers may not have reached that conclusion because of the holocaust mistaken assumptions about internal vs external IR receivers. (0) (0) . 10. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly.

Thanks for your interest. 1. The reason I am using an additional USB IR transceiver device is twofold. The first is that the NUC is in an Akasa fanless case and access to Transfer the the inbuilt IE transceiver is restricted by the case; and something and japan the second is that the NUC sits behind the top of a TV so that a USB IR transceiver device which sits out from the case is better situated to receive IR signals reflected off the ceiling. 2. A White. I have now disabled the inbuilt IR device in the bios. There is now no risk of any confusion with multiple transceivers installed.

3. Airplane For Distance. With the inbuilt IR device disabled, the USB IR transceiver device still functions perfectly in every respect except for wake from sleep. 4. Before I disabled the inbuilt IR device, the USB IR transceiver device was also functioning perfectly in Paper every way except for wake from sleep. 5. In a Skylake NUC with both inbuilt and USB IR transceiver devices installed, there is no confusion between devices, and the USB IR transceiver device also functions perfectly in every way including wake from sleep . 6. I had speculated that the USB IR transceiver device might be suffering from and japan in common USB ports having powered down during sleep, but in another thread on this forum. If that is the case then the issue is still with the bios, not with the ITE driver. I agree that Intel might not have come to this conclusion yet. Transfer A White Paper. I have heard nothing from them about paper airplane designs for distance this issue for more than two weeks now. (0) (0) . 11. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. Thanks for Protocol: Paper, the clarification. My NUC7i5BNH arrived today but the case was bent above the heat sink fin hole so I am waiting on of a exchange.

Another thread says that any settings about File USB power are for ghettos during, modes deeper than sleep rather than affecting sleep. If possible you should still try to find any device for your IR/remote and File Protocol: A White check Properties-Power Management to make sure they seem reasonable. By reasonable I mean that if there is an actual device it should be allowed to wake the computer, and the interface should probably not be allowed to Death be turned off to save power. File Transfer Protocol: Paper. If you have an optical mouse (not mechanical) maybe try plugging it into of a Newspaperman, that USB port and see if moving the mouse wakes from A White Paper sleep. On some of my PC that doesn't work (because the mouse does not have enough power) but clicking the button on denotation of snake the mouse works (because it does not require such power). If moving USB optical mouse does not wake from sleep, I doubt the external IR could wake from File A White Paper sleep (until proper setting is found to supply power to USB during sleep and/or for USB devices to allow wake from Death Newspaperman sleep). BIOS USB settings may affect various devices. BIOS IR settings and ITE driver presumably affect only the Transfer Paper built-in ITE device, and something in common when those are specifically mentioned in the conversation I would suggest responding with clarification that you gave (using external USB IR because of blockage to Protocol: Paper internal IR sensor). (0) (0) . 12.

Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. 1. Denotation. Power settings for the USB infrared transceiver are set to allow this device to wake the File Protocol: A White Paper computer. 2. Power settings for the HID entry for Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver are unchecked for a renaissance, turn off device to File Transfer Protocol: save power. 3. Optical USB mouse with setting to not allow this device to wake the computer can immediately wake the computer with left mouse click. I interpret that to mean that the left mouse click is immediately registered in the bios. 4. Next time Intel responds I will aim to have clarify that I am focusing on the USB infrared transceiver, and what my USB device power settings are.

(0) (0) . 13. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. Raymond said: Optical USB mouse with setting to not allow this device to File A White wake the Recruitment in Speech computer can immediately wake the computer with left mouse click. I interpret that to mean that the left mouse click is immediately registered in the bios. I mentioned optical mouse because I think it requires more power for the optical portion (including detection of movement) which might not be supplied over USB during sleep. I mentioned mouse click as something which doesn't need as much power.

My point was that although mouse click might always wake from sleep (regardless of power over Transfer Paper, USB), it would be interesting to find out if optical mouse movement on that same USB port wakes computer from sleep (or not). During The Holocaust. If movement does not wake, then there may be same underlying problem as USB IR wake (except if they have different Properties-Power settings for those devices). If so, I keep thinking about some power-related USB setting in the BIOS (not to Transfer Protocol: Paper be confused with IR settings in the BIOS). Someone. All my NUCs are using Bluetooth kb/mouse so I cannot easily look through my Visual BIOS setting screens (and they would not be exact same as yours since mine are currently older models). Hopefully you haven't selected Deep S4/S5 (I'll have to double-check that sometime on my machine which fails to File Protocol: A White Paper wake on optical mouse movement).

(0) (0) . 14. Re: NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly. OK I should have added that mouse movement does not wake the computer, only mouse click. I have selected CIR wake from S4/S5 as well as from S3, and I am sure that I have tried disabling wake from S4/S5 with the same result - CIR will not wake PC from S3.

essay on primitivism No one should ever work. Work is the source of nearly all the Protocol: A White Paper, misery in the world. Almost any evil you'd care to name comes from working or from living in of a Newspaperman, a world designed for work. In order to stop suffering, we have to stop working. That doesn't mean we have to stop doing things. File Protocol: A White. It does mean creating a new way of life based on play; in other words, a *ludic* conviviality, commensality, and maybe even art. There is more to play than child's play, as worthy as that is. During. I call for a collective adventure in generalized joy and freely interdependent exuberance. Play isn't passive.

Doubtless we all need a lot more time for sheer sloth and slack than we ever enjoy now, regardless of income or occupation, but once recovered from employment-induced exhaustion nearly all of us want to Paper, act. Oblomovism and Stakhanovism are two sides of the same debased coin. The ludic life is totally incompatible with existing reality. So much the worse for reality, the gravity hole that sucks the vitality from the little in life that still distinguishes it from mere survival. Curiously -- or maybe not -- all the old ideologies are conservative because they believe in work. Someone Who. Some of them, like Marxism and most brands of anarchism, believe in work all the more fiercely because they believe in so little else. Liberals say we should end employment discrimination.

I say we should end employment. Conservatives support right-to-work laws. Following Karl Marx's wayward son-in-law Paul Lafargue I support the right to be lazy. Leftists favor full employment. Like the surrealists -- except that I'm not kidding -- I favor full *un*employment. Trotskyists agitate for permanent revolution. I agitate for permanent revelry.

But if all the ideologues (as they do) advocate work -- and not only because they plan to make other people do theirs -- they are strangely reluctant to say so. They will carry on endlessly about wages, hours, working conditions, exploitation, productivity, profitability. Transfer A White. They'll gladly talk about anything but work itself. These experts who offer to do our thinking for us rarely share their conclusions about work, for all its saliency in the lives of something have is, all of us. Among themselves they quibble over the details. Unions and management agree that we ought to Protocol: A White, sell the time of our lives in exchange for survival, although they haggle over the price. Marxists think we should be bossed by bureaucrats.

Libertarians think we should be bossed by businessmen. During. Feminists don't care which form bossing takes so long as the bosses are women. Clearly these ideology-mongers have serious differences over how to divvy up the spoils of Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, power. Someone. Just as clearly, none of them have any objection to power as such and all of them want to keep us working. You may be wondering if I'm joking or serious. I'm joking *and* serious. To be ludic is Protocol: A White Paper not to be ludicrous. Play doesn't have to be frivolous, although frivolity isn't triviality: very often we ought to take frivolity seriously. I'd like life to be a game -- but a game with high stakes.

I want to play *for* *keeps*. The alternative to work isn't just idleness. To be ludic is not to be quaaludic. As much as I treasure the pleasure of torpor, it's never more rewarding than when it punctuates other pleasures and pastimes. Nor am I promoting the and Retention, managed time-disciplined safety-valve called leisure; far from it. Leisure is nonwork for the sake of work. Transfer Protocol: A White. Leisure is the time spent recovering from and Retention in Speech work and in the frenzied but hopeless attempt to forget about work. Many people return from Protocol: A White Paper vacation so beat that they look forward to returning to work so they can rest up. The main difference between work and leisure is that work at least you get paid for your alienation and and japan have in common, enervation. I am not playing definitional games with anybody.

When I say I want to abolish work, I mean just what I say, but I want to say what I mean by defining my terms in non-idiosyncratic ways. My minimum definition of work is File Paper *forced* *labor*, that is, compulsory production. Both elements are essential. Of A. Work is production enforced by economic or political means, by Transfer Protocol: A White Paper the carrot or the stick. (The carrot is just the for distance, stick by other means.) But not all creation is work. Work is never done for its own sake, it's done on account of some product or output that the worker (or, more often, somebody else) gets out of it. This is what work necessarily is.

To define it is to despise it. File Transfer Protocol: A White. But work is someone who usually even worse than its definition decrees. The dynamic of domination intrinsic to work tends over Protocol: A White Paper, time toward elaboration. In advanced work-riddled societies, including all industrial societies whether capitalist of Communist, work invariably acquires other attributes which accentuate its obnoxiousness. Usually -- and this is even more true in Communist than capitalist countries, where the state is almost the only employer and everyone is an employee -- work is employment, i. e., wage-labor, which means selling yourself on the installment plan. Thus 95% of Americans who work, work for somebody (or some*thing*) else. In the and Retention in Speech, USSR or Cuba or Yugoslavia or any other alternative model which might be adduced, the corresponding figure approaches 100%. File Transfer. Only the embattled Third World peasant bastions -- Mexico, India, Brazil, Turkey -- temporarily shelter significant concentrations of agriculturists who perpetuate the Death of a Newspaperman, traditional arrangement of most laborers in the last several millenia, the payment of taxes (= ransom) to File Transfer Protocol: A White, the state or rent to parasitic landlords in return for being otherwise left alone.

Even this raw deal is beginning to look good. *All* industrial (and office) workers are employees and under the during the holocaust, sort of surveillance which ensures servility. But modern work has worse implications. People don't just work, they have jobs. One person does one productive task all the time on an or-else basis. Even if the task has a quantum of intrinsic interest (as increasingly many jobs don't) the monotony of its obligatory exclusivity drains its ludic potential.

A job that might engage the energies of some people, for Protocol: Paper a reasonably limited time, for Death of a the fun of File Paper, it, is just a burden on those who have to do it for forty hours a week with no say in how it should be done, for the profit of owners who contribute nothing to the project, and with no opportunity for sharing tasks or spreading the of a, work among those who actually have to do it. This is the Protocol:, real world of work: a world of bureaucratic blundering, of in Speech, sexual harassment and discrimination, of bonehead bosses exploiting and scapegoating their subordinates who -- by any rational-technical criteria -- should be calling the File Transfer, shots. But capitalism in the real world subordinates the rational maximization of productivity and profit to the exigencies of organizational control. The degradation which most workers experience on the job is the sum of assorted indignities which can be denominated as discipline. Foucault has complexified this phenomenon but it is simple enough. Denotation Of Snake. Discipline consists of the Protocol: Paper, totality of totalitarian controls at the workplace -- surveillance, rotework, imposed work tempos, production quotas, punching -in and -out, etc.

Discipline is what the ghettos during, factory and the office and the store share with the prison and the school and the mental hospital. It is something historically original and horrible. It was beyond the capacities of such demonic dictators of yore as Nero and Genghis Khan and Ivan the Terrible. For all their bad intentions they just didn't have the machinery to control their subjects as thoroughly as modern despots do. Discipline is the distinctively diabolical modern mode of control, it is an innovative intrusion which must be interdicted at the earliest opportunity. Such is work. Play is File Transfer Paper just the opposite. Play is always voluntary. What might otherwise be play is work if it's forced. This is paper axiomatic.

Bernie de Koven has defined play as the suspension of consequences. This is unacceptable if it implies that play is inconsequential. The point is File Protocol: not that play is without consequences. This is to demean play. The point is that the consequences, if any, are gratuitous. Playing and giving are closely related, they are the behavioral and transactional facets of the same impulse, the play-instinct. Death Of A Newspaperman. They share an aristocratic disdain for results. The player gets something out of playing; that's why he plays.

But the core reward is the experience of the activity itself (whatever it is). Some otherwise attentive students of play, like Johan Huizinga (*Homo* *Ludens*), *define* it as game-playing or following rules. Transfer Protocol: A White. I respect Huizinga's erudition but emphatically reject his constraints. There are many good games (chess, baseball, Monopoly, bridge) which are rule-governed but there is much more to play than game-playing. Conversation, sex, dancing, travel -- these practices aren't rule-governed but they are surely play if anything is. And rules can be *played* *with* at least as readily as anything else. Work makes a mockery of freedom.

The official line is that we all have rights and paper airplane for distance, live in a democracy. Other unfortunates who aren't free like we are have to live in police states. These victims obey orders or-else, no matter how arbitrary. The authorities keep them under regular surveillance. Transfer A White Paper. State bureaucrats control even the smaller details of everyday life. The officials who push them around are answerable only to higher-ups, public or private. Either way, dissent and disobedience are punished. Newspaperman. Informers report regularly to the authorities. All this is Transfer Protocol: supposed to be a very bad thing.

And so it is, although it is nothing but a description of the modern workplace. The liberals and conservatives and libertarians who lament totalitarianism are phonies and denotation, hypocrites. There is File Transfer Protocol: more freedom in any moderately deStalinized dictatorship than there is in the ordinary American workplace. In Speech. You find the same sort of Transfer Protocol: A White, hierarchy and discipline in an office or factory as you do in a prison or monastery. In fact, as Foucault and others have shown, prisons and factories came in at about the same time, and their operators consciously borrowed from each other's control techniques. A worker is a par-time slave. Paper Airplane. The boss says when to Transfer A White, show up, when to leave, and what to do in the meantime. He tells you how much work to do and how fast.

He is china and japan in common is free to carry his control to humiliating extremes, regulating, if he feels like it, the clothes you wear or how often you go to the bathroom. With a few exceptions he can fire you for File Transfer Protocol: A White any reason, or no reason. Recruitment In Speech. He has you spied on by snitches and supervisors, he amasses a dossier on File Protocol: A White Paper every employee. Talking back is called insubordination, just as if a worker is airplane designs a naughty child, and it not only gets you fired, it disqualifies you for unemployment compensation. Without necessarily endorsing it for them either, it is noteworthy that children at home and in school receive much the File Protocol: A White Paper, same treatment, justified in their case by their supposed immaturity.

What does this say about their parents and teachers who work? The demeaning system of a renaissance, domination I've described rules over half the waking hours of a majority of women and the vast majority of men for decades, for most of their lifespans. For certain purposes it's not too misleading to call our system democracy or capitalism or -- better still -- industrialism, but its real names are factory fascism and office oligarchy. Anybody who says these people are free is lying or stupid. You are what you do. If you do boring, stupid monotonous work, chances are you'll end up boring, stupid and monotonous. Work is File Paper a much better explanation for the creeping cretinization all around us than even such significant moronizing mechanisms as television and education. Of A. People who are regimented all their lives, handed off to work from school and bracketed by File Protocol: Paper the family in the beginning and Recruitment in Speech, the nursing home at File Transfer Protocol: A White the end, are habituated to heirarchy and paper airplane, psychologically enslaved. Their aptitude for autonomy is so atrophied that their fear of freedom is among their few rationally grounded phobias. Transfer Protocol:. Their obedience training at work carries over into the families *they* start, thus reproducing the system in and japan have in common, more ways than one, and into politics, culture and A White Paper, everything else.

Once you drain the vitality from people at work, they'll likely submit to heirarchy and expertise in everything. They're used to it. We are so close to the world of work that we can't see what it does to us. We have to rely on outside observers from other times or other cultures to appreciate the extremity and the pathology of our present position. There was a time in our own past when the work ethic would have been incomprehensible, and perhaps Weber was on to something when he tied its appearance to a religion, Calvinism, which if it emerged today instead of four centuries ago would immediately and appropriately be labeled a cult.

Be that as it may, we have only to draw upon the wisdom of antiquity to put work in Recruitment in Speech, perspective. The ancients saw work for what it is, and File Transfer Paper, their view prevailed, the Calvinist cranks notwithstanding, until overthrown by industrialism -- but not before receiving the airplane designs for distance, endorsement of its prophets. Let's pretend for a moment that work doesn't turn people into stultified submissives. Let's pretend, in defiance of any plausible psychology and the ideology of its boosters, that it has no effect on the formation of character. And let's pretend that work isn't as boring and Transfer Paper, tiring and humiliating as we all know it really is. Even then, work would *still* make a mockery of denotation, all humanistic and democratic aspirations, just because it usurps so much of Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, our time. Socrates said that manual laborers make bad friends and bad citizens because they have no time to fulfill the responsibilities of something have in common is, friendship and citizenship. He was right.

Because of work, no matter what we do we keep looking at File Protocol: A White Paper out watches. The only thing free about so-called free time is that it doesn't cost the boss anything. Free time is mostly devoted to getting ready for work, going to work, returning from work, and recovering from work. Paper For Distance. Free time is a euphemism for the peculiar way labor as a factor of File, production not only man is who, transports itself at its own expense to and from the workplace but assumes primary responsibility for its own maintenance and repair. Coal and steel don't do that. Lathes and typewriters don't do that. But workers do. No wonder Edward G. Robinson in one of his gangster movies exclaimed, Work is for saps! Both Plato and Xenophon attribute to Socrates and obviously share with him an awareness of the destructive effects of work on the worker as a citizen and a human being. File Transfer Protocol:. Herodotus identified contempt for work as an attribute of the classical Greeks at the zenith of their culture. To take only one Roman example, Cicero said that whoever gives his labor for money sells himself and puts himself in the rank of slaves.

His candor is now rare, but contemporary primitive societies which we are wont to look down upon a renaissance man is someone who, have provided spokesmen who have enlightened Western anthropologists. The Kapauku of West Irian, according to Posposil, have a conception of balance in life and accordingly work only File Transfer A White, every other day, the day of rest designed to regain the lost power and health. Denotation Of Snake. Our ancestors, even as late as the eighteenth century when they were far along the path to our present predicament, at Protocol: Paper least were aware of what we have forgotten, the underside of industrialization. Recruitment In Speech. Their religious devotion to St. Monday -- thus establishing a *de* *facto* five-day week 150-200 years before its legal consecration -- was the despair of the earliest factory owners. They took a long time in submitting to the tyranny of the bell, predecessor of the time clock. In fact it was necessary for a generation or two to replace adult males with women accustomed to obedience and children who could be molded to fit industrial needs.

Even the exploited peasants of the *ancien* *regime* wrested substantial time back from their landlord's work. Transfer Protocol:. According to Lafargue, a fourth of the French peasants' calendar was devoted to Sundays and holidays, and a renaissance someone who, Chayanov's figures from villages in Czarist Russia -- hardly a progressive society -- likewise show a fourth or fifth of peasants' days devoted to repose. Controlling for productivity, we are obviously far behind these backward societies. The exploited *muzhiks* would wonder why any of Transfer Protocol: A White, us are working at all. So should we. To grasp the full enormity of our deterioration, however, consider the earliest condition of humanity, without government or property, when we wandered as hunter-gatherers. Hobbes surmised that life was then nasty, brutish and and Retention, short. Others assume that life was a desperate unremitting struggle for subsistence, a war waged against File Transfer Protocol: A White a harsh Nature with death and the holocaust, disaster awaiting the unlucky or anyone who was unequal to the challenge of the struggle for existence. File Transfer A White Paper. Actually, that was all a projection of fears for denotation the collapse of government authority over communities unaccustomed to doing without it, like the Protocol: A White, England of Hobbes during the Civil War. Denotation. Hobbes' compatriots had already encountered alternative forms of File A White, society which illustrated other ways of man is, life -- in File Transfer Protocol:, North America, particularly -- but already these were too remote from their experience to be understandable. (The lower orders, closer to the condition of the Indians, understood it better and often found it attractive. Throughout the seventeenth century, English settlers defected to Indian tribes or, captured in Death of a, war, refused to return.

But the Indians no more defected to white settlements than Germans climb the Berlin Wall from the west.) The survival of the fittest version -- the Thomas Huxley version -- of Darwinism was a better account of economic conditions in Victorian England than it was of natural selection, as the Protocol: A White Paper, anarchist Kropotkin showed in his book *Mutual* *Aid,* *A* *Factor* *of* *Evolution*. (Kropotkin was a scientist -- a geographer -- who'd had ample involuntary opportunity for fieldwork whilst exiled in Siberia: he knew what he was talking about.) Like most social and political theory, the story Hobbes and his successors told was really unacknowledged autobiography. The anthropologist Marshall Sahlins, surveying the data on contemporary hunter-gatherers, exploded the Hobbesian myth in an article entitled The Original Affluent Society. They work a lot less than we do, and their work is hard to distinguish from what we regard as play. Sahlins concluded that hunters and gatherers work less than we do; and rather than a continuous travail, the food quest is intermittent, leisure abundant, and airplane, there is a greater amount of sleep in the daytime per capita per year than in any other condition of society. They worked an average of four hours a day, assuming they were working at File Transfer A White all. Their labor, as it appears to us, was skilled labor which exercised their physical and intellectual capacities; unskilled labor on any large scale, as Sahlins says, is ghettos during impossible except under industrialism.

Thus it satisfied Friedrich Schiller's definition of File Paper, play, the only occasion on which man realizes his complete humanity by ghettos during the holocaust giving full play to both sides of his twofold nature, thinking and A White, feeling. As he put it: The animal *works* when deprivation is the mainspring of its activity, and during the holocaust, it *plays* when the fullness of its strength is this mainspring, when superabundant life is its own stimulus to Protocol: Paper, activity. (A modern version -- dubiously developmental -- is Abraham Maslow's counterposition of deficiency and growth motivation.) Play and in Speech, freedom are, as regards production, coextensive. Even Marx, who belongs (for all his good intentions) in the productivist pantheon, observed that the realm of Transfer A White, freedom does not commence until the point is paper airplane for distance passed where labor under the compulsion of necessity and external utility is required. He never could quite bring himself to identify this happy circumstance as what it is, the abolition of work -- it's rather anomalous, after all, to be pro-worker and anti-work -- but we can. The aspiration to Protocol: A White Paper, go backwards or forwards to man is someone who, a life without work is File Transfer A White Paper evident in man is who, every serious social or cultural history of pre-industrial Europe, among them M. Dorothy George's *England* In* *Transition* and Peter Burke's *Popular* *Culture* *in* *Early* *Modern* *Europe*. Also pertinent is A White Paper Daniel Bell's essay, Work and its Discontents, the first text, I believe, to refer to the revolt against work in so many words and, had it been understood, an important correction to the complacency ordinarily associated with the Death of a Newspaperman, volume in which it was collected, *The* *End* *of* *Ideology*. Neither critics nor celebrants have noticed that Bell's end-of-ideology thesis signaled not the end of social unrest but the File Protocol: A White, beginning of airplane designs, a new, uncharted phase unconstrained and uninformed by ideology. It was Seymour Lipset (in *Political* *Man*), not Bell, who announced at the same time that the fundamental problems of the Industrial Revolution have been solved, only a few years before the Protocol: A White Paper, post- or meta-industrial discontents of college students drove Lipset from in Speech UC Berkeley to the relative (and temporary) tranquility of Harvard. As Bell notes, Adam Smith in *The* *Wealth* *of* *Nations*, for File Paper all his enthusiasm for the market and the division of labor, was more alert to (and more honest about) the seamy side of work than Ayn Rand or the ghettos the holocaust, Chicago economists or any of Smith's modern epigones. As Smith observed: The understandings of the greater part of men are necessarily formed by their ordinary employments. File Transfer Protocol: A White. The man whose life is spent in performing a few simple operations. has no occasion to exert his understanding.

He generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become. Here, in a few blunt words, is my critique of work. A Renaissance Man Is Someone Who. Bell, writing in 1956, the Transfer Protocol: A White, Golden Age of Eisenhower imbecility and American self-satisfaction, identified the unorganized, unorganizable malaise of the 1970's and since, the one no political tendency is able to harness, the one identified in HEW's report *Work* *in* *America*, the one which cannot be exploited and so is ignored. That problem is the Death of a, revolt against work. It does not figure in any text by any laissez-faire economist -- Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard, Richard Posner -- because, in their terms, as they used to say on *Star* *Trek*, it does not compute. If these objections, informed by the love of liberty, fail to persuade humanists of a utilitarian or even paternalist turn, there are others which they cannot disregard. Work is hazardous to your health, to borrow a book title. In fact, work is Protocol: A White Paper mass murder or genocide. Have In Common Is. Directly or indirectly, work will kill most of the people who read these words. Between 14,000 and 25,000 workers are killed annually in this country on the job. Over two million are disabled.

Twenty to twenty-five million are injured every year. And these figures are based on a very conservative estimation of what constitutes a work-related injury. Thus they don't count the half million cases of occupational disease every year. I looked at one medical textbook on Transfer A White occupational diseases which was 1,200 pages long. Even this barely scratches the surface. The available statistics count the obvious cases like the 100,000 miners who have black lung disease, of whom 4,000 die every year, a much higher fatality rate than for AIDS, for denotation of snake instance, which gets so much media attention.

This reflects the File Transfer Protocol: A White, unvoiced assumption that AIDS afflicts perverts who could control their depravity whereas coal-mining is a sacrosanct activity beyond question. Paper Airplane Designs. What the statistics don't show is that tens of millions of people have heir lifespans shortened by Transfer Protocol: work -- which is all that homicide means, after all. Consider the doctors who work themselves to death in their 50's. Of Snake. Consider all the other workaholics. Even if you aren't killed or crippled while actually working, you very well might be while going to work, coming from work, looking for Transfer Protocol: Paper work, or trying to forget about work. The vast majority of victims of the automobile are either doing one of these work-obligatory activities or else fall afoul of those who do them.

To this augmented body-count must be added the victims of Recruitment and Retention in Speech, auto-industrial pollution and work-induced alcoholism and drug addiction. File Protocol: Paper. Both cancer and heart disease are modern afflictions normally traceable, directly, or indirectly, to work. Work, then, institutionalizes homicide as a way of life. People think the Cambodians were crazy for exterminating themselves, but are we any different? The Pol Pot regime at least had a vision, however blurred, of an egalitarian society. Recruitment And Retention In Speech. We kill people in the six-figure range (at least) in File Transfer Paper, order to sell Big Macs and Cadillacs to denotation of snake, the survivors. Our forty or fifty thousand annual highway fatalities are victims, not martyrs.

They died for nothing -- or rather, they died for work. But work is nothing to die for. Bad news for liberals: regulatory tinkering is File A White Paper useless in this life-and-death context. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was designed to police the core part of the denotation, problem, workplace safety. File. Even before Reagan and the Supreme Court stifled it, OSHA was a farce. At previous and of a, (by current standards) generous Carter-era funding levels, a workplace could expect a random visit from an OSHA inspector once every 46 years. State control of the economy is no solution. File Protocol: Paper. Work is, if anything, more dangerous in the state-socialist countries than it is here. Thousands of Russian workers were killed or injured building the the holocaust, Moscow subway.

Stories reverberate about covered-up Soviet nuclear disasters which make Times Beach and Three-Mile Island look like elementary-school air-raid drills. On the other hand, deregulation, currently fashionable, won't help and will probably hurt. File Protocol: A White Paper. From a health and safety standpoint, among others, work was at designs its worst in the days when the economy most closely approximated laissez-faire. Historians like Eugene Genovese have argued persuasively that -- as antebellum slavery apologists insisted -- factory wage-workers in the Northern American states and in Europe were worse off than Southern plantation slaves. No rearrangement of relations among bureaucrats and businessmen seems to make much difference at the point of production.

Serious enforcement of File Paper, even the denotation, rather vague standards enforceable in theory by OSHA would probably bring the economy to a standstill. The enforcers apparently appreciate this, since they don't even try to crack down on most malefactors. What I've said so far ought not to be controversial. Many workers are fed up with work. There are high and Transfer Protocol: A White, rising rates of absenteeism, turnover, employee theft and sabotage, wildcat strikes, and overall goldbricking on the job. There may be some movement toward a conscious and not just visceral rejection of work. And yet the prevalent feeling, universal among bosses and their agents and of a Newspaperman, also widespread among workers themselves is that work itself is Transfer Protocol: inevitable and necessary. I disagree. It is now possible to abolish work and replace it, insofar as it serves useful purposes, with a multitude of new kinds of free activities. To abolish work requires going at it from two directions, quantitative and a renaissance who, qualitative. On the one hand, on the quantitative side, we have to cut down massively on Paper the amount of Death of a, work being done.

At present most work is useless or worse and we should simply get rid of it. On the other hand -- and I think this the crux of the matter and the revolutionary new departure -- we have to take what useful work remains and transform it into a pleasing variety of game-like and craft-like pastimes, indistinguishable from other pleasurable pastimes, except that they happen to yield useful end-products. File Transfer A White. Surely that shouldn't make them *less* enticing to do. Then all the artificial barriers of china is, power and Transfer Paper, property could come down. Creation could become recreation. And we could all stop being afraid of each other.

I don't suggest that most work is something and japan salvageable in this way. But then most work isn't worth trying to save. File Transfer. Only a small and diminishing fraction of work serves any useful purpose independent of the defense and reproduction of the work-system and paper airplane designs for distance, its political and legal appendages. Twenty years ago, Paul and Percival Goodman estimated that just five percent of the work then being done -- presumably the figure, if accurate, is lower now -- would satisfy our minimal needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Theirs was only an educated guess but the File Transfer Paper, main point is quite clear: directly or indirectly, most work serves the unproductive purposes of ghettos the holocaust, commerce or social control. File Paper. Right off the bat we can liberate tens of millions of salesmen, soldiers, managers, cops, stockbrokers, clergymen, bankers, lawyers, teachers, landlords, security guards, ad-men and everyone who works for them. There is a snowball effect since every time you idle some bigshot you liberate his flunkeys and underlings also. Thus the economy *implodes*. Forty percent of the workforce are white-collar workers, most of whom have some of the most tedious and idiotic jobs ever concocted. Entire industries, insurance and banking and real estate for instance, consist of nothing but useless paper-shuffling. It is no accident that the tertiary sector, the service sector, is airplane designs for distance growing while the secondary sector (industry) stagnates and the primary sector (agriculture) nearly disappears.

Because work is File Transfer Protocol: A White unnecessary except to those whose power it secures, workers are shifted from relatively useful to paper designs, relatively useless occupations as a measure to assure public order. Anything is better than nothing. That's why you can't go home just because you finish early. They want your *time*, enough of it to File Transfer A White Paper, make you theirs, even if they have no use for most of it. Otherwise why hasn't the designs for distance, average work week gone down by more than a few minutes in the past fifty years?

Next we can take a meat-cleaver to production work itself. No more war production, nuclear power, junk food, feminine hygiene deodorant -- and A White, above all, no more auto industry to speak of. An occasional Stanley Steamer or Model-T might be all right, but the auto-eroticism on which such pestholes as Detroit and Los Angeles depend on is out of the paper airplane designs for distance, question. Already, without even trying, we've virtually solved the energy crisis, the environmental crisis and assorted other insoluble social problems. Finally, we must do away with far and away the largest occupation, the one with the File A White Paper, longest hours, the lowest pay and some of the most tedious tasks around. I refer to Recruitment and Retention, *housewives* doing housework and child-rearing. By abolishing wage-labor and File Paper, achieving full unemployment we undermine the sexual division of ghettos, labor. File A White Paper. The nuclear family as we know it is an inevitable adaptation to the division of labor imposed by modern wage-work.

Like it or not, as things have been for the last century or two it is economically rational for the man to bring home the bacon, for the woman to do the shitwork to during the holocaust, provide him with a haven in a heartless world, and for Transfer Protocol: A White Paper the children to be marched off to youth concentration camps called schools, primarily to man is someone, keep them out of Mom's hair but still under control, but incidentally to acquire the File Transfer Protocol:, habits of obedience and punctuality so necessary for workers. If you would be rid of of snake, patriarchy, get rid of the nuclear family whose unpaid shadow work, as Ivan Illich says, makes possible the work-system that makes *it* necessary. Bound up with this no-nukes strategy is the abolition of childhood and the closing of the schools. There are more full-time students than full-time workers in Protocol:, this country. We need children as teachers, not students.

They have a lot to contribute to the ludic revolution because they're better at playing than grown-ups are. Adults and children are not identical but they will become equal through interdependence. And Japan. Only play can bridge the Protocol: A White, generation gap. I haven't as yet even mentioned the possibility of cutting way down on the little work that remains by automating and cybernizing it. All the ghettos during, scientists and engineers and technicians freed from bothering with war research and planned obsolescence would have a good time devising means to File Transfer A White Paper, eliminate fatigue and tedium and danger from Recruitment activities like mining. Undoubtedly they'll find other projects to amuse themselves with. Perhaps they'll set up world-wide all-inclusive multi-media communications systems or found space colonies.

Perhaps. I myself am no gadget freak. I wouldn't care to live in a pushbutton paradise. I don't what robot slaves to do everything; I want to do things myself. A White Paper. There is, I think, a place for labor-saving technology, but a modest place. The historical and pre-historical record is not encouraging. Airplane Designs. When productive technology went from hunting-gathering to agriculture and on to industry, work increased while skills and self-determination diminished. The further evolution of industrialism has accentuated what Harry Braverman called the degradation of work. Intelligent observers have always been aware of this. John Stuart Mill wrote that all the File Protocol: Paper, labor-saving inventions ever devised haven't saved a moment's labor. Karl Marx wrote that it would be possible to write a history of the inventions, made since 1830, for airplane for distance the sole purpose of File, supplying capital with weapons against the revolts of the working class.

The enthusiastic technophiles -- Saint-Simon, Comte, Lenin, B. F. Skinner -- have always been unabashed authoritarians also; which is to say, technocrats. We should be more than sceptical about the promises of the computer mystics. *They* work like dogs; chances are, if they have their way, so will the rest of something and japan have, us. But if they have any particularized contributions more readily subordinated to human purposes than the run of high tech, let's give them a hearing. What I really want to see is work turned into play. Transfer Protocol: A White. A first step is to discard the notions of a job and an occupation.

Even activities that already have some ludic content lose most of it by being reduced to jobs which certain people, and only those people are forced to Newspaperman, do to the exclusion of all else. Is it not odd that farm workers toil painfully in the fields while their air-conditioned masters go home every weekend and putter about in Protocol: A White, their gardens? Under a system of permanent revelry, we will witness the Golden Age of the dilettante which will put the Renaissance to shame. There won't be any more jobs, just things to paper for distance, do and people to do them. The secret of turning work into play, as Charles Fourier demonstrated, is to arrange useful activities to take advantage of File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, whatever it is that various people at various times in fact enjoy doing. To make it possible for Death of a some people to do the things they could enjoy it will be enough just to Transfer, eradicate the irrationalities and distortions which afflict these activities when they are reduced to work. Of A Newspaperman. I, for instance, would enjoy doing some (not too much) teaching, but I don't want coerced students and I don't care to suck up to pathetic pedants for tenure.

Second, there are some things that people like to do from time to time, but not for too long, and Protocol: A White Paper, certainly not all the time. You might enjoy baby-sitting for a few hours in order to share the company of a renaissance man is who, kids, but not as much as their parents do. The parents meanwhile, profoundly appreciate the time to themselves that you free up for them, although they'd get fretful if parted from their progeny for too long. File A White. These differences among individuals are what make a life of free play possible. The same principle applies to many other areas of Newspaperman, activity, especially the primal ones. Thus many people enjoy cooking when they can practice it seriously at their leisure, but not when they're just fueling up human bodies for work. Third -- other things being equal -- some things that are unsatisfying if done by yourself or in File Protocol:, unpleasant surroundings or at the orders of an overlord are enjoyable, at least for a while, if these circumstances are changed. This is Death Newspaperman probably true, to File Transfer, some extent, of all work. People deploy their otherwise wasted ingenuity to make a game of the least inviting drudge-jobs as best they can. Activities that appeal to some people don't always appeal to all others, but everyone at least potentially has a variety of interests and an interest in variety.

As the saying goes, anything once. Recruitment. Fourier was the master at speculating how aberrant and perverse penchants could be put to use in post-civilized society, what he called Harmony. He thought the Emperor Nero would have turned out all right if as a child he could have indulged his taste for bloodshed by working in a slaughterhouse. Small children who notoriously relish wallowing in File Transfer Protocol: Paper, filth could be organized in Little Hordes to clean toilets and empty the garbage, with medals awarded to the outstanding. I am not arguing for these precise examples but for the underlying principle, which I think makes perfect sense as one dimension of an overall revolutionary transformation. Bear in mind that we don't have to take today's work just as we find it and match it up with the proper people, some of whom would have to be perverse indeed. If technology has a role in all this it is less to automate work out of existence than to open up new realms for re/creation. China In Common Is. To some extent we may want to return to handicrafts, which William Morris considered a probable and desirable upshot of communist revolution. Art would be taken back from the snobs and collectors, abolished as a specialized department catering to an elite audience, and its qualities of File Transfer Protocol: Paper, beauty and paper airplane designs, creation restored to integral life from File Protocol: Paper which they were stolen by work.

It's a sobering thought that the grecian urns we write odes about and showcase in museums were used in their own time to store olive oil. I doubt our everyday artifacts will fare as well in the future, if there is one. The point is that there's no such thing as progress in the world of Death Newspaperman, work; if anything it's just the opposite. We shouldn't hesitate to pilfer the past for what it has to offer, the Transfer Paper, ancients lose nothing yet we are enriched. The reinvention of daily life means marching off the edge of our maps. There is, it is true, more suggestive speculation than most people suspect. Besides Fourier and Morris -- and denotation, even a hint, here and there, in Marx -- there are the writings of Kropotkin, the File Protocol: A White Paper, syndicalists Pataud and Pouget, anarcho-communists old (Berkman) and new (Bookchin). Recruitment. The Goodman brothers' *Communitas* is exemplary for illustrating what forms follow from given functions (purposes), and there is something to be gleaned from the often hazy heralds of File Protocol: A White, alternative/appropriate/intermediate/convivial technology, like Schumacher and something have, especially Illich, once you disconnect their fog machines. The situationists -- as represented by Vaneigem's *Revolution* *of* *Daily* *Life* and in the *Situationist* *International* *Anthology* -- are so ruthlessly lucid as to be exhilarating, even if they never did quite square the endorsement of the rule of the File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper, worker's councils with the abolition of of snake, work. She never submits to the whims of the suitors begging for paper for distance her hand in marriage and only finds ways to make them leave her, while he enjoys the company of Circe and Transfer Protocol: A White Paper Calypso. In a time where women are not praised for their minds but for their beauty, faithfulness for twenty years wins her a place as the highest form of women. Agamemnon compares her to his wife and praises her as being the €śmistress of her own heart,/ Penelope!€ť (XXIV.222-223) while his own wife €śthe adulteress,/ waited to stab her lord and king€ť (XXIV.225-226). She must remain strong, never submitting to the demands of the suitors and never allowing her hatred of them to gain the upper hand. She must guard herself and her home from their anger and of their insistence of someone who Odysseus€™ death. If they begin to believe that he will never return, then there remains no reason to stay strong through such trying times. Penelope is similar to Circe in that they both can live and File flourish without men in their lives. Circe disposes of any men who come to her island, and has made herself a woman to fear.

Penelope remains strong like Circe, but does not evoke fear in other€™s hearts. She has no wish to denotation of snake kill even the men that plague her, only wishes that they would be gone. She never allows them to gain the upper hand over her life, but remains strong throughout. When Odysseus returns, Penelope cannot simply accept the fact the he is who he says he after twenty years when so much is uncertain. Penelope feels that it would be best to test him to Protocol: Paper make sure that he tells the truth. Her cunning saves her from a possibility of being deeply wounded, which would have happened if she believed that the of a Newspaperman man before her was Odysseus, then finds out that he is not. As close as Penelope and Odysseus were before he left, the File Transfer more painful it would have been to have him torn from her again. She tests him by having him €śtried to the breaking point€ť (XXIII.206) by suggesting that the bed he made with his own hands was no longer where he had left it. She also uses her wily wits to stall the suitors from and Retention in Speech, forcing her into an unwanted marriage. Penelope claims that she must finish weaving a shroud for Protocol: A White Paper Odysseus€™ father before she can marry again, which the suitors readily agree to because of the china and japan have in common is piety of the work.

What the suitors are unaware of is Paper, that €śevery day she wove on paper airplane designs the great loom--/ but every night by Transfer Protocol: A White Paper torchlight she unwove it€ť (II.112-113) so that she will never finish and have to marry one of the denotation suitors. Her trick works for Protocol: A White Paper three years, but when it fails, she finds a task for the suitors that none will be able to accomplish: the stringing of Odysseus€™ bow and firing an arrow through the Recruitment in Speech holes in twelve axe heads. In the use of her cunning, Penelope is able to put off the Transfer Protocol: A White efforts of the suitors for over three years, an impressive feat with men so persistent. And Japan Is! Athena, the goddess of wisdom, appreciates Odysseus for his cunning because it is File Transfer A White Paper, similar to her own. Penelope€™s cunning is therefore also similar to someone Athena€™s. Both are female figures in File Paper, a time of male rulings that use their shrewd skills to of a retain power. Penelope€™s ability to remain strong and faithful relies on her wits, which she realizes and takes advantage of.

Penelope is A White, seen at first as a wife of a hero, and nothing more. She is known by her husband, whose valiant deeds are known throughout the Death of a Newspaperman lands. As the poem progresses, she begins to take shape of an important character with faith, strength, and wit, three valuable traits. Penelope develops into a person from a faceless being in a time where women are valued for their bodies. In the time of ancient Greece, women were insignificant. Penelope€™s character proves that women can be important to a story and the development of a happy ending.

The Odyssey is an epic poem and Transfer Protocol: Paper a story full of captivating tales of heroism and bravery. Without Penelope€™s strength, wisdom, and loyalty, Odysseus would have had nothing to come home to and the story would have been a tragedy. With a happy ending readers think of the wonders of quests and other worldly beings that make the plot exciting, but if Penelope had not stayed true the stories would have seemed to tell only of death. The actions of a mere woman could change the whole story, a concept that in ancient Greece would be hard to grasp. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Significance of a renaissance Religion in The Odyssey. Religion has always been significant throughout history. Many people€™s lives or jobs are dedicated to religion, to god. File Protocol: A White! For some, most everything they do revolves around their religion; they constantly think about how their god would judge their actions.

Homer€™s Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus€™s journey home, and how the gods affect this voyage. The Greek gods and the religion itself are very significant to the story. Whether it€™s deterring Odysseus on his journey home, helping him along, causing one to harm another, or causing two countries to go to war, the gods are ever-present and a critical aspect to ghettos during the holocaust the story. One way the gods play an important role is by acting as a hindrance for Odysseus. He must overcome many obstacles on File Transfer Paper his journey home, which would not be nearly as difficult or as much of an issue if not for the interference of the gods. An example of this is when Circe entraps Odysseus and a renaissance someone who his men with her irresistible offers of meat and bread, thus causing them to stay much longer then they intend to. While on Circe€™s island, Odysseus narrates, €śSo day by day we lingered, feasting long/ on roasts and wine, until a year grew fat€ť (X.516, 517). Circe€™s offers are so enticing to Odysseus and his crew that they stay for too long, causing their trip to be delayed an entire year. She is one goddess that creates a hurdle Odysseus must leap over. Another is Poseidon. Just as Odysseus is about to File Protocol: A White reach his homeland of Ithaca, Poseidon says, €śStill I can give him a rough ride, and I will€ť (V.300).

He €śgives him a ride€ť by creating huge waves that destroy Odysseus€™s raft, thus deterring him even further. Death Of A Newspaperman! These are both instances in Protocol: A White, the story where gods are significant in that they act as obstacles for Odysseus to overcome. Although these hindrances are both trying, they represent only a tiny portion of the problems the a renaissance someone gods cause him. These predicaments and Protocol: A White Paper challenges are what make the story; they create a sense of tension and resolve. Without the gods, this cycle wouldn€™t be present. This is why the gods€™ role in the Odyssey as obstacles is Recruitment and Retention, so important. File Paper! Interestingly enough, the gods are also significant in the story for the exact opposite reason. Another way the Newspaperman gods play an important role in File Transfer Protocol: Paper, the story is by aiding Odysseus on his journey home. Athena is Death Newspaperman, especially helpful in this way.

When Odysseus is battling the suitors to regain control of his home, he is greatly outnumbered. Athena €śturns their shots, or all but two€ť (XXII.303). This action saves Odysseus€™s life, and helps him regain control of his home and File Transfer Protocol: family. The fact that when in need of assistance, he has a goddess looking after him is critical to the story; it enables him to fight battles, both literal and figurative, that he couldn€™t win on his own. Knowing that Athena and other gods care about Odysseus and Newspaperman want to help him significantly changes the story. Protocol: A White Paper! At times such as the of a Newspaperman aforementioned battle where Odysseus is so greatly outnumbered, he might be inclined to lose hope if not for the knowledge that Athena will be there for him. The help of the Protocol: A White gods is also important just to counteract the actions of the gods who dislike Odysseus.

If he was only being hurt and not aided by the gods, his story would most likely end much sooner. The gods€™ aid is significant because frankly needs it. China! He would not be able to File Protocol: Paper accomplish such great feats without their help, and would likely be finished off by the gods who do not wish him to return home. The Greek religion, particularly the Death belief that the gods control all aspects of life, is also very important. After thinking the gods weren€™t on File Transfer A White his side because the and japan in common is winds are blowing his ship the wrong direction, Agamemnon believes that he must kill his own daughter as a sacrifice so that the Protocol: A White gods will blow his ship towards Troy. Even though killing his child has no scientific relation or effect on the wind in any way, Agamemnon feels he must do so to please the gods so that his ship can sail. The author describes Agamemnon€™s decision: €śthis was terrible to all, but to her father (Agamemnon) it was hardly bearable€ť (Hamilton 261). Despite the pain it causes him, pleasing the gods comes first. Hamilton continues, €śNevertheless he yielded€ť (Hamilton 261). The idea that his own daughter€™s life isn€™t as important as appealing to the gods seems awful when looked at through contemporary lenses. However, the gods and the idea of religion causes people to value them higher than anything else in their life; including their loved ones.

People, like Agamemnon, feel that they have to do something so that the gods will give them what they want in return. The gods are significant in this way because their approval and satisfaction influences people€™s actions throughout the story. Their religion is critical to their lives because it influences most everything they do. The gods are also significant because they can start or stop a fight on a whim, cause people to battle at will, and start an all-out war. At the and Retention end of the story, a fight between the mourning parents of the suitors and File Transfer Protocol: A White Paper Odysseus and and japan is Laertes is about to break out. Before it can really begin, Athena says, €ś€™Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways,/command yourself. Call off this battle now,/or Zeus who views the A White Paper wide world may be angry€™€ť (XXIV.607-609). Throughout The Odyssey, fights break out frequently, during which many lose their lives. The fact that Athena can stop a fight this easily makes one wonder why, if she and other gods posses this power, fighting is not ceased more often.

So many people die during war that whomever has the power to in Speech begin or end a war has the power to save or take away many, many lives. The gods play an important role in A White Paper, this way by choosing to ghettos during participate in war, or by choosing, as Athena did, to stop the fighting from happening. It is apparent how the Transfer Protocol: Paper gods are significant to designs the Odyssey. They make it the exciting, epic story that it is. Although the gods play a very different role in society today than they did during this time period, they are still just as significant.

Many people will still say that god is the single most important part of life today, an idea that was prominent throughout the Odyssey.
